Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s vision of “One District, One Medical College” gets a significant boost with Central govt’s recognition

Lucknow : The Yogi government’s efforts to implement the One District, One Medical College initiative are showing positive results. It is the result of CM Yogi’s efforts that, the Union Health Ministry has approved the commencement of MBBS programs at five additional new medical colleges in the state in response to the second appeal. Additionally, the number of seats at the medical colleges in Kanpur Dehat and Lalitpur has been increased from 50 to 100.

This development has added 600 more MBBS seats to the state, bringing the total number of new MBBS seats for the academic session 2024-25 to 1,200.

Previously, seven new medical colleges in the state had been recognized, with MBBS programs approved for 100 seats each in five of these colleges, and 50 seats each in Kanpur Dehat and Lalitpur Medical Colleges.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had also engaged with Union Health Minister JP Nadda, leading to the Principals of the colleges filing an appeal with the National Medical Commission (NMC). This resulted in the recognition of the seven medical colleges in the first appeal.

With this approval, the total number of MBBS seats in the state has now reached 11,200. This includes 5,150 seats in government medical colleges and 6,050 seats in private medical colleges.

DGME Kinjal Singh stated, “The department recently submitted an appeal to the Union Health Ministry requesting approval for 100 MBBS seats at autonomous state medical colleges in Auraiya, Chandauli, Gonda, Lakhimpur Kheri, and Kaushambi. Additionally, we sought permission to increase the MBBS seats from 50 to 100 at Kanpur Dehat and Lalitpur. As a result, the ministry has granted approval for 100 MBBS seats at all these medical colleges.”

She further explained, “Previously, an appeal was made to the National Medical Commission (NMC) for 100 MBBS seats at the autonomous state medical colleges in Bijnor, Bulandshahr, Kushinagar, Pilibhit, Kanpur Dehat, Lalitpur, and Sultanpur. The NMC approved 100 MBBS seats for the colleges in Bijnor, Bulandshahr, Kushinagar, Pilibhit, and Sultanpur, while Kanpur Dehat and Lalitpur received approval for 50 MBBS seats each.”

DGME stated that according to Section 28(6) of the NMC Act 2019, if the Letter of Permission (LOP) is not granted by the NMC after the first appeal, a second appeal can be submitted within 30 days under this provision. An appeal was made again following this rule.
