Trump Threatens 100% Tariffs on Nations Imposing Digital Taxes on US Tech Firms
New Delhi, June 2026: US President Donald Trump on Friday warned that any country introducing a Digital Services Tax (DST) targeting American technology companies would face an immediate 100 per cent tariff on all goods exported to the United States, escalating tensions over global digital taxation policies.
In a statement posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump said several European nations were actively considering or preparing to implement Digital Services Taxes on major US technology companies. He argued that such measures unfairly single out American firms and pledged a swift and forceful response if the proposals move ahead.
“Numerous European countries have been discussing the imminent implementation of a Digital Services Tax on American companies. Some of these countries are close to actually doing this,” Trump wrote.
He declared that any nation proceeding with such taxes would immediately face punitive trade measures from Washington.
“Any country that imposes such a tax will immediately be met with a 100 per cent tariff on any and all goods sent to the United States of America,” Trump said, adding that the tariffs would take precedence over all existing or pending trade agreements with the affected countries.
According to Trump, the proposed tariffs would come into force without delay if governments proceed with the digital tax measures.
“This tariff will supersede trade deals made with the country, whether implemented, signed, or not. Additionally, the 100 per cent tariff will be immediately imposed if they proceed,” he stated.
Although Trump did not identify the countries he was referring to, the warning comes amid continuing debates in Europe and other parts of the world over taxing revenues earned by large multinational digital companies. Several European nations already levy Digital Services Taxes, while others are considering similar legislation. Countries including Brazil and Turkey have also explored or implemented digital taxation frameworks.
The United States has consistently argued that unilateral Digital Services Taxes disproportionately target American technology giants, including major digital platforms headquartered in the US. Washington has maintained that such taxes discriminate against US companies and undermine international efforts to establish a globally coordinated taxation framework.
Trump’s latest remarks underscore the administration’s hardline stance on protecting American technology firms from what it views as discriminatory taxation. The threat of imposing a blanket 100 per cent tariff represents one of the strongest retaliatory trade measures proposed by the United States in response to digital tax policies.
Successive US administrations have opposed unilateral digital taxes and previously launched trade investigations into similar measures adopted or proposed by countries including India, France, Spain, Italy and the United Kingdom. Washington has repeatedly argued that these taxes place an unfair burden on US-based technology companies and should instead be addressed through multilateral negotiations.
Trump’s statement is expected to intensify global trade tensions, particularly as governments continue balancing efforts to tax the rapidly expanding digital economy while avoiding potential trade disputes with the United States.
