Trump Says Netanyahu May Visit White House Soon as US Pushes to Reset Middle East Strategy

Washington, July 2026 : US President Donald Trump has indicated that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could visit the White House as early as next week, signalling a possible effort by the two leaders to strengthen ties after months of policy differences over Iran, Lebanon and broader Middle East security issues.

Speaking in a telephone interview, Trump expressed confidence about his relationship with the Israeli Prime Minister, despite reports of recent disagreements between the two longtime political allies.

“We get along very well. Netanyahu knows who the boss is,” Trump said, referring to himself while discussing the prospect of the meeting.

According to officials familiar with the discussions, Netanyahu requested the meeting and Trump said it could take place after he returns from the NATO summit. However, Israeli officials suggested that scheduling constraints may push the visit to the following week, depending on the US President’s travel commitments.

The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that Netanyahu and Trump held a telephone conversation on Friday during which the Israeli leader congratulated the United States on the 250th anniversary of American independence. During the call, both leaders reaffirmed the importance of the longstanding partnership between their countries and agreed to meet in Washington in the near future.

In a statement, Netanyahu’s office said the Prime Minister described the United States as “a guarantor of global freedom” and stressed that Israel highly values its strategic relationship with Washington.

If the meeting goes ahead, it will be the first face-to-face discussion between the two leaders since their February meeting in the White House Situation Room. That meeting came shortly before escalating tensions in the Middle East, during which Israel reportedly proposed a coordinated military strategy targeting Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.

Since then, however, differences have emerged between Washington and Jerusalem over the handling of regional security challenges.

According to US officials quoted in media reports, several senior advisers within the Trump administration have grown increasingly critical of Netanyahu’s recent decisions, particularly regarding military operations in Lebanon and his opposition to diplomatic engagement with Iran.

Reports suggest Trump personally voiced frustration during a telephone conversation last month, criticising Israel’s military escalation along the Lebanese border and urging restraint. The President reportedly encouraged Netanyahu to support diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions and advancing a broader regional security framework.

One of the most significant policy disagreements involved Trump’s decision to approve a Memorandum of Understanding with Iran last month, extending an existing ceasefire and opening a fresh round of negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear programme.

The move reportedly disappointed Israeli officials, who have consistently argued for maintaining maximum pressure on Iran rather than pursuing renewed diplomacy. Netanyahu has repeatedly warned that any agreement allowing Iran to retain elements of its nuclear infrastructure could pose long-term security risks to Israel and the wider region.

The Trump administration has nevertheless defended its approach, arguing that diplomacy backed by military strength offers the best opportunity to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons while avoiding another prolonged regional conflict.

Washington has also reportedly encouraged Israel to reduce military operations in southern Lebanon and consider a phased withdrawal as part of a broader regional stabilisation plan designed to lower the risk of another full-scale war.

Political analysts believe a White House meeting would carry considerable domestic importance for Netanyahu, who is preparing for Israel’s general elections scheduled for October. Opinion polls have suggested that the Prime Minister faces a challenging electoral contest, making a public display of strong US-Israel relations potentially valuable for his campaign.

A meeting with the American President could reinforce Netanyahu’s image as an experienced international leader capable of maintaining Israel’s most important strategic alliance during a period of regional uncertainty.

During the interview, Trump also addressed developments involving Iran following the reported assassination of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei during the recent conflict.

The President claimed Iranian officials remain interested in reaching an agreement with Washington despite the leadership transition taking place in Tehran.

“They are begging to make a deal,” Trump said, adding that both sides had agreed to temporarily pause negotiations until Iran completes funeral ceremonies for Khamenei.

Trump suggested that the United States is deliberately avoiding actions that could further destabilise Iran’s political leadership while diplomatic channels remain open.

“They are all there. One shot and we can take them all out, but we’re not going to do that because then we would have nobody to negotiate with,” he remarked.

The President also commented on television images showing large crowds mourning Khamenei, questioning the authenticity of the emotional scenes.

“Maybe it’s fake tears,” Trump said when asked about the public mourning.

Despite the recent tensions between Washington and Jerusalem, officials on both sides continue to describe the US-Israel partnership as strong and strategically vital. The anticipated White House meeting is expected to focus on Iran’s nuclear programme, regional security, the situation in Lebanon, defence cooperation and broader efforts to maintain stability in the Middle East following months of conflict and diplomatic uncertainty.
