First Made-in-India Airbus C295 Set for Indian Air Force Delivery in September 2026

New Delhi, July 2026 : India is set to achieve a major milestone in its defence manufacturing journey with the delivery of the first Made-in-India Airbus C295 military transport aircraft to the Indian Air Force (IAF) in September 2026. Assembled at the TATA Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) facility in Vadodara, Gujarat, the aircraft successfully completed its maiden test flight on June 10, 2026, marking a significant step forward in the country’s efforts to build indigenous aerospace capabilities.

The C295 programme is being executed under a $2.6 billion contract signed between the Government of India and Airbus Defence and Space in 2021 for the procurement of 56 tactical transport aircraft. Under the agreement, the first 16 aircraft are being delivered in flyaway condition from Airbus’ manufacturing facility in Seville, Spain, while the remaining 40 aircraft are being manufactured and assembled entirely in India at the Vadodara Final Assembly Line.

The project is regarded as one of India’s most ambitious defence manufacturing initiatives, combining technology transfer, domestic production and industrial capability development. It represents the first time a private Indian company has established a military aircraft final assembly line in the country, reflecting the expanding role of the private sector in India’s defence ecosystem.

The C295 aircraft will replace the Indian Air Force’s ageing fleet of Avro Hawker-Siddeley HS748 transport aircraft, which have served the force since the 1960s. Designed as a versatile tactical airlifter, the C295 offers significantly enhanced operational capabilities. It can carry payloads of up to nine tonnes, transport 71 fully equipped troops or 45 paratroopers, and operate efficiently from short, semi-prepared and unprepared airstrips.

These capabilities make the aircraft particularly valuable for India’s unique operational requirements, including high-altitude deployments in the Himalayas, logistics support to forward military bases, disaster relief operations, humanitarian assistance and rapid troop movement across challenging terrain.

The aircraft’s versatility extends well beyond conventional transport duties. The C295 platform can be configured for medical evacuation missions, maritime patrol operations, electronic warfare, intelligence gathering and special operations support, making it a multi-role asset for the armed forces.

Once all 56 aircraft are inducted, the Indian Air Force is expected to become the largest operator of the Airbus C295 anywhere in the world. This will substantially strengthen India’s tactical airlift capability while enhancing operational flexibility across a wide range of military and humanitarian missions.

The successful maiden flight of the first Made-in-India aircraft in June 2026 demonstrated the growing maturity of India’s defence manufacturing sector. The programme is the result of close collaboration between Airbus, TATA Advanced Systems Limited and a large network of Indian micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), many of which are producing critical components and sub-systems for the aircraft.

The project is expected to create thousands of highly skilled jobs across engineering, manufacturing, maintenance and aerospace technology while helping develop an indigenous supplier base capable of meeting international quality standards. Industry experts believe the programme will strengthen India’s position in global aerospace supply chains and create opportunities for future exports.

Beyond meeting the Indian Air Force’s operational needs, the C295 programme serves as a foundation for the country’s long-term ambitions in aerospace manufacturing. The experience gained through aircraft assembly, systems integration and component production is expected to benefit future indigenous military aviation programmes and contribute to the development of advanced defence technologies.

The delivery of the first domestically manufactured C295 in September 2026 will therefore represent more than the induction of a new transport aircraft. It will symbolise India’s growing ability to manufacture sophisticated military platforms within the country and reinforce the government’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives aimed at achieving self-reliance in defence production.
