The death toll in Myanmar from Typhoon Yagi has risen to 293.
Flooding and landslides triggered by the typhoon earlier this month have caused widespread devastation. According to state media, 293 people have been confirmed dead, with 89 others still missing. Over 168,000 homes have been submerged in areas, including the capital, Naypyitaw. Government buildings, schools, roads, and bridges have also sustained significant damage, with communication lines cut off in some regions, making it challenging to assess the full extent of the disaster.
The World Food Programme (WFP) has announced plans to provide one month’s worth of emergency food supplies to up to 500,000 people affected by the flooding. Samuel Clendon, Head of Programme for WFP Myanmar, expressed concern over the worsening situation, stating that “the recent flooding compounds existing challenges, and we have serious concerns about the impact on the food security of vulnerable people in Myanmar.”
The WFP reports that one in four people in Myanmar is already food insecure and remains committed to prioritizing life-saving aid for those most affected by the disaster.
