The Solid Waste Management Centre in Tuirial was constructed under the North East Capital Cities Development Implementation Programme (NERCCDIP) by the State Investment Programme Management and Implementation Unit (SIPMIU) of the Urban Development & Poverty Alleviation Department. It was inaugurated in 2019 and handed over to the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) in 2022.

According to the AMC, waste collected across Aizawl city is systematically processed at the centre. The AMC employs 35 workers for daily operations. Around 190 garbage trucks collect approximately 119.42 tonnes of waste each day, which is then delivered to the Solid Waste Management Centre in Tuirial. Of this, 89.09 tonnes is wet waste, while 30.33 tonnes is dry waste. The dry waste is sorted, and about 7.98 tonnes are recycled daily and sold to 11 AMC-approved scrap dealers. Since March of this year, wet waste has been converted into manure by the Mechanical Compost Plant.
