Chief Minister Visits His Old School, Govt. Gandhi Memorial High School, Champhai, To Mark Its 75th Anniversary Celebration
Champhai : Today, Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma inaugurated the Platinum Jubilee celebration of Govt. Gandhi Memorial High School (GM H/S), Champhai, where he once studied.
As part of the celebrations, the Chief Minister visited the High School Museum, established in 1968 and recognized as the first museum in Mizoram. Afterward, he toured the school premises and held an interaction session with the students.
The Chief Minister shared, “It brings me great joy to visit my old high school once again, where I also had the privilege of seeing Mizoram’s first museum. Revisiting the memories has deeply moved me. I studied in Class 8 here in 1965, but in 1966, due to the turmoil in the state, I had to flee and suspend my studies. After recovering from a physical illness, I re-enrolled to complete Class 10 in 1970 and successfully passed with good results. Later, I pursued PUC (Pre-University Course) through night classes amidst numerous challenges.”
He added, “During my time at this school, I was an active youth leader for the Mizo Union Block. My math skills were appreciated by Headmaster Pu Thanseia, who encouraged me with a daily reward of Rs. 10 for teaching Mathematics. During the first Mizoram UT elections in 1972, Mizo Union formed the government under Chief Minister Pu Ch. Chhunga.”
The Chief Minister acknowledged GM High School as a cornerstone of his success, crediting it for the knowledge and values he acquired. He emphasized the importance of the school in shaping individuals and encouraged today’s students to utilize the facilities for their growth. He expressed pride in the school’s legacy as one of Mizoram’s oldest high schools and urged the current students to follow the footsteps of its many successful alumni.
He advised, “To achieve success in academics, students must focus diligently from the first step. Work with discipline, avoid laziness, and prepare thoroughly for exams. That was my approach to studies. Despite minimal meals, we worked hard and excelled. Skipping meals while working is more productive than overindulgence, which often leads to lethargy.” He expressed hope that this High School would continue to produce many more outstanding individuals, extending his appreciation and support.
He further stated, “Challenges in academics or life should not deter us. Each of us is blessed with unique abilities, and with consistent effort, we can achieve great things. Education is the foundation for countless successful individuals across the globe. Our flagship scheme, Handholding Policy, is designed to support and empower individuals with diverse skills and potential.”
The event, chaired by Headmaster Pu HT Vanlalsawma, saw the school express gratitude to the Chief Minister for attending and inaugurating the Platinum Jubilee celebration. Presently, the school has 232 students, 14 teaching staff, and one non-teaching staff.
The grand Platinum Jubilee celebration is scheduled for November 21-22 and will be attended by alumni, including Home Minister Pu K. Sapdanga, as the chief guest.
