Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra Halted at Ghazipur Border Amid Political Tensions

In a dramatic turn of events, senior Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were stopped at the Ghazipur border on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway while en route to Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh. The leaders were on a mission to meet families affected by the recent violence in the region. However, the administration had other plans, leading to heightened tensions and political drama.

Barricades and Chaos at the Border

As the convoy approached the Ghazipur border, barricades were erected, effectively halting their movement. Security measures were visibly intensified, causing significant disruptions to traffic and resulting in massive jams along the expressway. Eyewitnesses reported long queues of vehicles and frustrated commuters stuck for hours.

The violence that erupted in Sambhal on November 24 has not only left a mark on the local community but has also triggered intense political maneuvers. Congress leaders sought to address the aftermath of the violence, but their journey was thwarted by heavy security deployment.

Offers to Proceed Denied

Rahul Gandhi, known for his direct engagement with authorities, interacted with police officers at the border. He proposed three alternatives to allow the Congress delegation to proceed. The first offer was to let the entire convoy pass, which the police promptly denied. In response, the Congress leadership proposed that a smaller delegation comprising Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, KC Venugopal, Ajay Rai, and Avinash Pandey be allowed to visit Sambhal. This, too, was rejected.

Finally, Gandhi suggested that he alone, accompanied by a police vehicle, be permitted to proceed. Despite his willingness to cooperate with the administration’s conditions, this proposal was also turned down. According to UP Congress in-charge Avinash Pandey, the administration remained unyielding even after extensive discussions.

Escalating Tensions

The convoy’s halt sparked outrage among Congress workers present at the border. Many began protesting by climbing over the barricades, demanding an explanation for the restrictions. They questioned the administration’s motives, asking, “If Sambhal is under control, why are we being stopped?”

Adding to the scene, Congress MP Imran Masood criticized the administration for creating a “jam-like situation” and failing to provide clarity. He stated, “We demand either to let us proceed or detain us. The administration is doing neither.”

Amid the rising tensions, security personnel formed a human chain to prevent the convoy from advancing. The protest continued as leaders like Ajay Rai and Imran Masood joined the crowd at the border. Meanwhile, Pappu Yadav, MP from Purnea, reached the site to express solidarity with Gandhi and his mission.

Traffic Disruptions and Public Outrage

The heightened security and barricading created severe traffic disruptions along the Delhi-Meerut Expressway and NH-9, particularly affecting Ghaziabad. Commuters expressed frustration over the delays, with some lamenting missed commitments and examinations. One commuter noted, “My daughter has an exam in Meerut, and we have been stuck here since morning. Why block traffic for a political visit? Leaders should protest without inconveniencing the public.”

The public anger underscored the complexities of balancing political action and public convenience.

Restrictions and Protests Across Uttar Pradesh

In addition to the Ghazipur border standoff, the ripple effects of Rahul Gandhi’s intended visit were felt across Uttar Pradesh. Congress Legislature Leader Aradhana Mishra Mona, who planned to join the delegation, was placed under house arrest in Lucknow. Similar measures were reported in districts surrounding Sambhal, where Congress leaders were detained or restricted from traveling.

Protests also erupted at various locations. In Ghaziabad, Ajay Kumar Lallu led a spirited demonstration, climbing barricades and voicing his frustration. Meanwhile, in Bulandshahr, Congress leaders were detained, further fueling discontent within the party.

Background of Sambhal Violence

The tensions stem from violence that erupted in Sambhal on November 24 during an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) examination of a Mughal-era mosque. The ASI survey was initiated following a petition claiming that the mosque’s site was originally a Harihar temple. Clashes broke out between locals and authorities, resulting in four deaths and injuries to several others, including police personnel.

Eleven days later, tensions remain high in the district, with prohibitory orders under Section 144 imposed. The Sambhal administration has restricted the entry of outsiders until December 10, citing security concerns.

Congress’ Stand and Administration’s Response

Rahul Gandhi, in his capacity as Leader of the Opposition, sought to assess the situation firsthand. Congress leaders have criticized the administration for denying their delegation entry, arguing that it is their democratic right to visit affected areas and stand in solidarity with victims.

SP MP Ram Gopal Yadav also commented on the issue, noting that his party faced similar restrictions. He remarked, “Preventing political leaders from visiting Sambhal raises questions about transparency and the administration’s handling of the situation.”

Administration’s Actions

To manage the situation, the administration deployed additional security forces across critical locations, including the Ghazipur border, Chhajarsi toll plaza near Hapur, Brajghat toll plaza, and the Amroha-Sambhal border. District authorities have been instructed to monitor Rahul Gandhi’s movements and ensure that no delegation crosses their respective boundaries.

Moradabad Zone Commissioner Anjaney Singh emphasized the need for caution, citing the district’s ongoing tensions. Sambhal DM Rajendra Pansia coordinated with police in surrounding districts to maintain law and order.

Looking Ahead

Despite the roadblocks, Rahul Gandhi remains steadfast in his commitment to visit Sambhal. Congress leaders continue to demand accountability and transparency from the administration. Meanwhile, the people of Sambhal await a resolution to the violence and its aftermath.

The events at the Ghazipur border highlight the challenges of navigating political accountability, public safety, and civil liberties. As tensions persist, all eyes remain on how the administration and political leaders navigate these sensitive issues in the days to come.
