Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi arrived in Lahore on his three-day visit to Pakistan.

Iranian President Raisi’s historic visit to Pakistan marks a significant diplomatic milestone, being the first such visit by any head of state following Pakistan’s February 8 general elections. Welcoming President Raisi and his delegation at the Allama Iqbal International Airport, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz led the reception, joined by a host of dignitaries including Punjab Chief Secretary Zahid Akthar Zaman and Inspector General of Police Dr Usman Anwar. The Iranian president’s visit to the mausoleum of Allama Iqbal, where he paid homage with a floral wreath and offered prayers, underscored the deep cultural ties between Iran and Pakistan. Addressing the gathering, President Raisi expressed a sense of familiarity and warmth, emphasizing the special bond between the two nations that transcends borders.

While President Raisi had expressed a desire to address the public through a public rally, logistical constraints prevented its realization. Nonetheless, the visit holds immense symbolic importance in bolstering bilateral relations and fostering greater understanding between the two neighbouring nations. The Foreign Office had earlier announced President Raisi’s itinerary, which included engagements with provincial leadership in both Lahore and Karachi. In anticipation of the visit, local holidays were declared in Lahore district and Karachi division to mitigate any inconvenience to the public, demonstrating the significance accorded to the visit by both Punjab and Sindh governments.

The visit will further extend to Karachi, where the University of Karachi is set to confer an honorary doctorate degree upon President Raisi. With engagements spanning cultural landmarks and official meetings, President Raisi’s visit underscores the enduring friendship between Iran and Pakistan, paving the way for enhanced cooperation and mutual understanding in the region.
