Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Mr. Udhayanidhi Stalin inspects water overflow at Chembarambakkam and Poondi reservoirs
Chennai : Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Mr. Udhayanidhi Stalin conducted an inspection at the Chembarambakkam Lake and Poondi Thiruvallur Sathyamurthy Reservoir, both of which are brimming with water due to continuous rainfall. Excess water from these reservoirs is being released as a precautionary measure.
Mr. Udhayanidhi Stalin visited Chembarambakkam Lake, one of the primary water sources for Chennai located in Kanchipuram district, to examine the water levels and oversee the release of surplus water. He later proceeded to inspect the Poondi Sathyamurthy Reservoir in Thiruvallur district. The Deputy Chief Minister reviewed the preparatory measures for the controlled release of water from these reservoirs.
During his media address, he mentioned that the heavy rains over the past two days, triggered by a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal, have resulted in full storage levels at major reservoirs, including Chembarambakkam Lake, Poondi Reservoir, and Red Hills Lake.
He emphasized that, under the directive of Chief Minister Mr. M.K. Stalin, district ministers, collectors, and engineers from the Water Resources Department are closely monitoring the situation. Currently, Poondi Reservoir is at 99.16% of its total capacity of 3,231 million cubic feet (mcft), holding 3,204 mcft of water. Controlled water releases are being conducted without any public safety concerns. Similarly, Chembarambakkam Lake is at 96% capacity, and Red Hills Lake is at 90%.
The Deputy Chief Minister assured that precautionary steps are being taken, including consistent monitoring, public alerts, and ready shelters for affected residents. He urged people to remain calm and cooperate with government efforts.
Ministers, MLAs, district officials, and representatives of local bodies participated in the inspections.
