Committee Formed to Review Permission for CNG and Electric Vehicles in Mumbai Metropolitan Region
Mumbai : To regulate the growing number of vehicles and control pollution in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), a proposal to impose restrictions on petrol and diesel vehicles, similar to Delhi, is under consideration. To conduct a comprehensive study on permitting only CNG and electric vehicles, the government has formed a 7-member expert committee through a government resolution dated January 22, 2025.
This committee is chaired by retired official Sudhir Kumar Srivastava and includes:
- State Transport Commissioner
- Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic)
- Managing Director of Mahanagar Gas Limited
- Project Director of Mahavitaran
- President of SIAM (Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers)
- Deputy Transport Commissioner (Implementation-1) as Member Secretary
The Mumbai High Court, in response to a public interest litigation (PIL) on January 9, 2025, directed the formation of this committee. The committee is tasked with studying the feasibility of restricting petrol and diesel vehicles and allowing only CNG and electric vehicles to operate in Mumbai. It will submit a detailed report with recommendations to the government within three months, according to Additional Transport Commissioner Bharat Kalsakar.
