TN Govt Forms Committee to Review Pension Schemes
The Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) was introduced for state government employees on April 1, 2003. At the central level, the National Pension System (NPS) was implemented for central government employees starting January 1, 2004. However, state government employees continued to be part of the Contributory Pension Scheme.
Despite this, state government employees who were in service before April 1, 2003, have been consistently demanding the reimplementation of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS). In this context, on January 24, 2025, a notification was issued by the Central Government regarding the Integrated Pension System for central government employees.
Taking this into consideration, the state government has decided to form a committee to comprehensively analyze the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), and the Integrated Pension System. The committee will study the state’s financial situation and the pension demands of employees to recommend a suitable pension policy.
The committee comprises the following officials:
- Mr. Kanthideep Singh Bedi, IAS – Additional Chief Secretary, Rural Development & Panchayat Raj Department.
- Dr. R. Kannan, Former Director, Madras School of Economics.
- Mr. Pratik Dayal, IAS – Deputy Secretary (Revenue Expenditure), Finance Department, Member Secretary.
The committee has been instructed to submit a detailed report with recommendations within nine months.
