Pope Francis in Critical Condition Amid Respiratory Crisis

Rome – Pope Francis remains in critical condition after suffering a severe asthmatic respiratory crisis while being treated for pneumonia and a complex lung infection, the Vatican said on Saturday.

The 88-year-old pontiff, who has been hospitalized for over a week at Gemelli Hospital, required high-flow oxygen therapy and blood transfusions after tests revealed thrombocytopenia, a condition associated with anemia and low platelet counts.

Doctors Warn of Sepsis Risk

Medical experts treating Francis say his condition remains fragile, and while he is alert, he is experiencing increased pain compared to the previous day. The Vatican’s latest statement confirmed that his prognosis remains reserved, emphasizing that he is “not out of danger.”

Doctors warn that the most significant threat to his health is sepsis, a serious blood infection that can arise as a complication of pneumonia. However, as of Friday, there were no signs of sepsis, and Francis was responding to medications, his medical team reported.

Dr. Sergio Alfieri, Head of Medicine and Surgery at Gemelli Hospital, expressed concern about the risk of infection spreading to the bloodstream, stating, “If sepsis develops, given his respiratory condition and age, it would be very difficult to overcome.”

Francis, who has a history of chronic lung disease, was admitted to the hospital on February 14 after his bronchitis worsened, leading to the diagnosis of a viral, bacterial, and fungal respiratory tract infection. Subsequent tests confirmed pneumonia in both lungs.

Deteriorating Health and Intensive Treatment

Saturday’s medical update revealed that Francis’ blood tests detected low platelet counts, a condition that can result from infections, medication side effects, or underlying illnesses, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

To stabilize his condition, doctors have prescribed cortisone, antibiotics, and oxygen therapy, along with absolute rest. While he remains in good spirits, his condition continues to fluctuate, making his recovery uncertain.

The Vatican’s latest update marked the first time it officially used the term “critical” to describe Francis’ condition, underscoring the severity of his health crisis.

Despite the illness, Francis continues to work from his hospital room, receiving visitors, reviewing documents, and maintaining communication with Vatican officials.

Public Concern and Global Reactions

News of the Pope’s worsening condition has sparked concern among Catholics worldwide. In Rome, crowds have gathered outside Gemelli Hospital, offering prayers and vigils for his recovery.

Leaders from various religious and political backgrounds have sent messages of support and encouragement. Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, expressed hope for Francis’ recovery, stating, “We continue to pray for his health and strength during this difficult time.”

A Decade of Papal Leadership

Francis, the first Pope from the Americas, was elected in March 2013, succeeding Pope Benedict XVI. Throughout his papacy, he has championed social justice, environmental advocacy, and interfaith dialogue.

Despite health challenges, including a colon surgery in 2021 and recurring mobility issues, he has remained an active leader, traveling extensively and addressing major global issues.

Uncertain Road Ahead

With his health in a precarious state, concerns grow over his ability to continue fulfilling his papal duties. Vatican officials have not disclosed contingency plans should his condition worsen further.

For now, Francis remains under close medical supervision, with his doctors and the Catholic world hoping for a recovery while acknowledging the seriousness of his illness.
