Illegal Fishing – Three Arrested for Using Bleaching Powder and Dynamo in Mat River
Hnahthial – Yesterday at 9:30 AM, the Hnahthial District Fisheries Development Officer (DFDO), Pu George Lalnuntluanga, along with members of the Leite Branch YMA, conducted an operation in Mat River and apprehended three individuals from Zobawk South for illegally fishing using bleaching powder and dynamo.
As per directives from the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Lunglei, the arrested individuals were identified as Thanpuia, son of R. Vanlalhmuaka; Lalnunsiama, son of Lalbeiseia; and Lalrinfela, son of R. Lalhmingchhuana. Following the operation, the caught fish and fishing equipment were confiscated.
The DFDO and YMA members sternly warned the accused, emphasizing that illegal fishing not only leads to imprisonment but also carries financial penalties. The Hnahthial District Fisheries Development Office has been directed to take further action.
DFDO Pu George Lalnuntluanga stated that the Mizoram government is actively working to protect the state’s freshwater biodiversity, as indiscriminate fishing practices have caused severe damage. He appreciated the efforts of the YMA in curbing illegal fishing and urged the public to refrain from activities that harm aquatic life.
He further informed that individuals engaging in river fishing must obtain a license from the Fisheries Department. Fishing without a license or using harmful methods is strictly prohibited by law and punishable by fines or imprisonment.
