Trump Reports ‘Significant Headway’ in U.S.–Japan Trade Talks
Washington : U.S. President Donald Trump stated that “significant progress” was achieved in trade negotiations with Japan, following high-level talks held at the White House.
Taking to Truth Social, Trump wrote, “A great honor to have just met with the Japanese Delegation on Trade. Big Progress!” The discussions come as the U.S. seeks to expedite trade agreements with 15 priority countries, including Japan.
Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba described the meeting as “honest and constructive,” but signaled that substantial differences still exist and future negotiations could prove difficult.
Citing updates from Economic Revitalization Minister Ryosei Akazawa—who is currently in Washington—Ishiba noted that Akazawa engaged in a 50-minute meeting with President Trump, followed by a 75-minute session with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
“There were positive exchanges, but key issues remain unresolved,” Ishiba told the media.
Throughout the discussions, President Trump emphasized America’s position in the global economic landscape. Akazawa, on Japan’s behalf, voiced concerns over the adverse effects of U.S. tariffs on Japanese industry, employment, and investment. He pushed for a review and potential revision of the current tariff structure.
While hopeful, Ishiba acknowledged that reaching a final agreement would not be simple. He also indicated plans to travel to the U.S. for direct discussions with President Trump.
Minister Akazawa mentioned that a second round of talks is anticipated later this month. Both sides, he said, have agreed to continue working toward a swift and mutually beneficial resolution.
Earlier, on April 2, Trump had implemented reciprocal tariffs on imports from various countries, introducing a standard 10% rate. Though some nations initially faced increased duties, these were rolled back to the base rate for 90 days to support ongoing negotiations.
