Visit to Watermelon Farmer’s Field by Horticulture Department and NEIDA for Training and Observation
Lunglei : The Lunglei District Horticulture Officer, Mr. Lalṭhakima, along with staff from the Horticulture Department and the team from NEIDA (North East Initiative Development Agency), visited the watermelon farm of Mr. Isak Lalhuliana in Ramlaitui village. The purpose of the visit was to study and observe best practices in successful watermelon cultivation and explore further intervention opportunities.
Mr. Isak Lalhuliana had earlier participated in a “Watermelon Cultivation Training” organized by the Lunglei District Horticulture Office in 2024. Inspired by the training, he took up watermelon farming in Ramlaitui village and has since achieved considerable success. His flourishing watermelon field demonstrates that, with proper training and support, watermelon cultivation can be profitable in this region.
The visit was also aimed at exploring how to scale up this success through effective post-harvest management and marketing, including potential integration with the Farmers Producer Organisation (FPO) supported by NEIDA. Present at the site visit were Lunglei District Coordinator of NEIDA, Mr. Lalbeiseia, and his team, who, along with the DHO and staff, assessed the field.
The Horticulture Department provided Mr. Isak with watermelon seeds, technical training, and continuous guidance. The department expressed appreciation for his success and noted it as an encouraging example. It was also mentioned that, seeing his achievements, more families in the Ṭhingva area are now showing interest in watermelon cultivation. The Lunglei DHO assured that efforts would be made to provide necessary support to those interested in taking up the crop in a cluster-based approach.
