Bomb Attacks in Nigeria Kill at Least 18, Injure Over 40
In Gwoza, a town in Nigeria’s northeastern state of Borno, a series of bomb attacks believed to be carried out by suspected female suicide bombers killed at least 18 people and injured more than 40. The attacks targeted a wedding, a funeral, and a hospital.
“The first bomb blast occurred around 3 pm during a wedding ceremony. A few minutes later, another bomb exploded at General Hospital Gwoza. While the community was gathering for a funeral for the deceased, another suicide bomber detonated a bomb,” reported Saidu.
The confirmed fatalities include children, adults, and pregnant women, with local media suggesting the death toll could be higher, potentially nearing 30. Injured victims are receiving initial treatment at the Medical Regimental Services (MRS) clinic before being transferred to Maiduguri for further care.
In response, the military has imposed a curfew in Gwoza. As of now, no group has claimed responsibility for the bombings. This tragic incident underscores the ongoing security challenges in Nigeria’s northeastern region, which has been plagued by violence and insurgency.
