American Cardinal Robert Prevost Elected as Pope Leo XIV

Rome : American prelate Robert Francis Prevost has been elected the new Pope, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. His election marks a historic moment, as he becomes the second consecutive pontiff from the Americas, following the late Pope Francis of Argentina.

Born in Chicago, the 69-year-old Prevost is a member of the Augustinian order and has served extensively in Peru. Prior to his election, he held the influential positions of Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, both of which he was appointed to by Pope Francis, who also elevated him to the rank of Cardinal in 2023.

The announcement of the new Pope came as white smoke billowed from the chimney atop the Sistine Chapel, signaling to thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square that the conclave had reached a decision. Joyful cheers erupted among the clergy and laity who had been anxiously awaiting the outcome.

Appearing on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Leo XIV greeted the crowd warmly, saying in Italian: “Peace be with all of you.” He added: “Brothers and sisters dearest, this is the first greeting of Christ resurrected. I would like to offer a greeting of peace to reach your families, all of you, wherever you are.”

The 133 cardinals gathered in the Sistine Chapel had resumed voting after a lunch break, following an inconclusive session in the morning. A papal election requires a two-thirds majority, or 89 votes in this conclave.

Pope Leo XIV now steps into a role of immense spiritual and global influence, as the Roman Catholic Church begins a new chapter under his leadership.
