Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri Faces Online Abuse After Ceasefire Announcement
India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has become the target of widespread online abuse after announcing a ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan. The personal attacks against him and his family have sparked strong condemnation from political leaders and former diplomats, who have called the trolling unjust and unacceptable.
On Saturday, Misri revealed at a media briefing that the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan had reached an agreement to enforce a ceasefire. According to the announcement, both countries would immediately halt all military actions across land, air, and sea.
Following the statement, Misri was subjected to a wave of trolling on social media. He was labeled with offensive terms such as “traitor,” “gaddar,” and “anti-national.” Some users went so far as to target his daughters, questioning their citizenship and sharing personal information.
All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Asaduddin Owaisi condemned the online attacks, saying, “Targeting a sincere and hardworking official like Vikram Misri just for announcing a government decision is completely unfair. He is a loyal diplomat who has served the nation with dedication. It is important to understand that officials follow the decisions made by the government—they are not the decision-makers themselves.”
Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav also criticized the central government for failing to support Misri. “Despite abusive content being posted against him and his family, no minister or representative of the ruling party has come forward to defend him,” Yadav wrote on X (formerly Twitter). He pointed out that the abuse had crossed all limits, and that action should be taken against those spreading hate.
Former Foreign Secretary Nirupama Menon Rao called the trolling “utterly disgraceful.” In a post on X, she wrote, “Vikram Misri has served India with professionalism and commitment. There is no justification for the hate campaign against him. Publicizing personal details and abusing his family is beyond unacceptable. This toxic hatred must end.”
The incident has raised concerns about the treatment of public servants who are tasked with communicating sensitive government decisions. Many have urged the public to differentiate between the messengers and the policymakers, and to respect the dignity of those serving the nation.
