Labour Tipped for Landslide Win at UK Election
Britain’s Conservative Party has all but conceded election defeat to Keir Starmer’s Labour, warning of a record majority as voters head to the polls on Thursday.
Opinion polls indicate the centre-left Labour Party is set for a significant victory, ending 14 years of Conservative government and potentially making Starmer the next Prime Minister. YouGov’s final seat projection on Wednesday placed Labour on track to win a majority of 212 seats, the largest of any party in modern history.
Both Starmer and Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak spent the final day of campaigning warning voters of severe economic consequences if the other wins.
Voting began at 7:00 am local time across more than 40,000 polling stations, ranging from church halls and schools to pubs and even a ship. At 10:00 pm, broadcasters will announce exit polls, typically providing an accurate indication of the election results.
Results from the UK’s 650 constituencies will come in overnight, with the winning party expected to reach 326 seats—the threshold for a parliamentary majority—by dawn on Friday.
Polls suggest voters will punish the Tories after 14 years of often chaotic rule, possibly ousting several government ministers. There is even speculation that Sunak himself might not retain his seat, potentially making him the first sitting prime minister to lose his seat in a general election.
