Shubman Gill Named India’s New Test Captain for England Tour
Mumbai: In a major development, right-handed batter Shubman Gill has been appointed as the 37th Test captain of India for the upcoming five-match Test series against England. The announcement was made by chief selector Ajit Agarkar, who revealed the 18-member squad on Saturday. The much-anticipated series is set to begin on June 20.
Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has been named the vice-captain, marking his return to leadership responsibilities after his comeback from injury. The squad selection was finalised during a meeting at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai, attended by the selection committee led by Agarkar and convened by BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia.

Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc & wk), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, B Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel (wk), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav.
The Test series will be played at five iconic venues — Headingley, Edgbaston, Lord’s, Old Trafford, and The Oval — running from June 20 to August 4.
India will be eyeing a historic win, as they aim to clinch a Test series victory in England for the first time since 2007.
The leadership change signals a new chapter for India’s red-ball team, with Gill taking on the mantle during a challenging overseas tour.
