Mumbai : The state government plays a crucial role in providing relief and rescue operations during disasters. It is important to instill confidence among citizens that the government and administration stand firmly behind those affected. Taking into account potential disaster risks, Chief Secretary Sujata Saunik has instructed all agencies involved in civil and disaster management to remain vigilant during such periods.
A meeting regarding heavy rains, disasters, and management was held under the chairpersonship of Chief Secretary Mrs. Saunik. Attendees included Mumbai Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani, Additional Chief Secretary of Relief, Rehabilitation, and Disaster Management Sonia Sethi, Additional Chief Secretary of Urban Development Asim Gupta, Principal Secretary of the Directorate General of Information and Public Relations Brijesh Singh, and Director of Disaster Management Satishkumar Khadke, among others.
Warning Signs Must Be Installed at Critical Locations
Chief Secretary Sujata Saunik emphasized that agencies working in disaster management must ensure there is no loss of life during such times. In this regard, incomplete works, retaining walls, riverbanks, and other hazardous areas should be regularly inspected and monitored. Warning signs must be placed at necessary locations and citizens should be informed accordingly. If dangerous situations arise at places like railway stations, transport systems, or water supply centers, these services should be temporarily suspended.
Agencies Must Provide Factual and Transparent Information
Agencies involved in disaster management should be equipped with all essential tools and resources. Public advisories regarding precautionary measures during disasters should be disseminated from a single, centralized source. Information about relief provided must be prominently shared with the public through social media, electronic media, newspapers, and other platforms. At the same time, objective and factual reporting of disaster-related events is essential. Water samples should be collected and tested, and awareness about infectious diseases should be raised. Given the heightened risk of such diseases during the monsoon season, both civic and disaster management departments must remain alert, instructed Chief Secretary Saunik.
