Kanpur set for major urban transformation with Aero City and Knowledge City Projects
Kanpur : Under the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Kanpur is poised to scale new heights of development. The Kanpur Development Authority (KDA), under the auspices of the Department of Housing and Urban Planning, has commenced construction on two transformative projects: Aero City, located near the New Chakeri Airport, and Knowledge City, situated near IIT Kanpur.
Together, these projects represent a significant investment of Rs 1240 crore and mark a major step toward establishing Kanpur as a hub for residential, commercial, and educational excellence. This will not only provide economic progress to Kanpur, but will also prove to be a necessary step for employment generation and infrastructure development.
As part of CM Yogi’s vision to develop world-class urban infrastructure across Uttar Pradesh, the Department of Housing and Urban Planning is revitalising cities with modern amenities and sustainable design principles. In line with this goal, KDA is implementing 61 development projects in Kanpur alone, with a total outlay of Rs 37,263 crore. Among these, the Aero City project near New Chakeri Airport is being developed at a cost of Rs 360 crore.
Spread over 300 acres, Aero City is being constructed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. It is envisioned as an Aerotropolis—a metropolitan sub-region around the airport that seamlessly integrates residential, commercial, and economic activities. With direct connectivity to NH-34, this area is rapidly emerging as a prime destination for both investors and citizens.
Notably, Aero City is being developed in phases and will feature cutting-edge infrastructure, catering to the growing demand for air travel and urban expansion. This project will not only accelerate Kanpur’s economic growth but will also generate employment and create new revenue streams for KDA.
Simultaneously, KDA is developing Knowledge City near IIT Kanpur, with an investment of Rs 880 crore across 359 acres. Also being executed under the PPP model, this project aims to promote education, research, and technological innovation. Important projects like a National Institute of Design (NID), a technical university, a research center, a biotechnology institute, a science museum, and a training institute are also proposed for Knowledge City. These will help make Kanpur a hub for education, research, and innovation.
Additionally, the upcoming Outer Ring Road (ORR) and the 60-meter-wide South Arterial Road will provide better connectivity to the area. Due to its close proximity to IIT Kanpur, this project will become a model for academic and research collaboration.
Together, the Aero City and Knowledge City projects are poised to transform Kanpur’s urban landscape. Not only will they boost the city’s economy and create local employment, but they will also make a significant contribution to Uttar Pradesh’s overall development trajectory, reinforcing the state’s position as a rising economic powerhouse.
