“Even if Shahapur School’s Recognition is Cancelled, Students’ Education Must Not Suffer” – Women’s Commission Chairperson Rupali Chakankar

Shahapur: In the wake of the objectionable incident at a school in Shahapur, Women’s Commission Chairperson Mrs. Rupali Chakankar has directed the education department to initiate urgent measures to ensure that students do not face academic loss, even if the school’s recognition is cancelled. She also urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation in coordination with parents.

The controversy erupted after menstrual blood was allegedly found in the school washroom, prompting the headmistress to order an invasive physical inspection of all female students by a female cleaner. Taking cognizance of the incident, Mrs. Chakankar visited Shahapur today and met with the parents. She later reviewed the investigation progress with education officials and police personnel.

After assessing the views of parents and officials, Mrs. Chakankar stated that the school lacked a grievance redressal committee and that the “Sakhi-Savitri” committee was merely a formality. The accused headmistress has already been suspended. Following the inquiry, the education officer has recommended the cancellation of the school’s recognition. However, since such action could disrupt students’ education, she directed that the education department take steps to resume school operations independently from Monday onwards.

In a police briefing, it was reported that cases have been filed against eight individuals, with five currently in custody under police remand until July 15. Interrogation of the remaining three is ongoing. Two trustees have also been charged, while parents have demanded action against two more trustees, citing past incidents. Mrs. Chakankar instructed that a joint meeting with police, parents, and education authorities be held tomorrow to hear grievances and ensure a deeper investigation.

She further directed that the investigation be completed promptly and a chargesheet filed without delay. Additionally, she advised that counseling be provided by the Child Welfare Committee for all girls subjected to the humiliating physical checks, with due consideration of their mental well-being.
