Mumbai to Get 268 New AC Local Trains under MUTP
Elevated Road Approved Between Thane and Navi Mumbai International Airport
Green Signal for Ambitious Metro Line 11 Project
Approval for New Township in Nagpur
Mumbai, Aug 2025 : Several key decisions regarding transportation and urban development were taken at the meeting of the Cabinet Infrastructure Committee chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The Chief Minister stated that these projects will provide modern transport systems and a new direction for the development of Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Nagpur.
The committee approved the construction of third and fourth tracks on the Pune–Lonavala suburban railway line. This decision will strengthen the Pune–Lonavala corridor, providing the much-needed connectivity for industrial, residential, and commercial development in the region. It will also help reduce traffic pressure within Pune city. Additionally, under Phase 1 of the Pune Metro, two new stations at Balajinagar–Bibwewadi and Swargate–Katraj have been approved.
To modernize the suburban railway service, approval has been granted to procure new trains under MUTP Phase 3 and 3A. In the first phase, 268 fully air-conditioned trains will be purchased. These trains, similar to metro rakes, will feature closed doors and high-standard facilities. The old, non-AC trains without doors will be phased out gradually and replaced with these modern ones. Importantly, the Chief Minister clarified that there will be no hike in ticket fares. The procurement will begin after clearance from the Central Government.
For the residents of Thane and Navi Mumbai, a major infrastructure boost has also been cleared – the construction of a 25-km-long elevated road between Thane and Navi Mumbai International Airport. This will ensure fast and dedicated connectivity for Thane, Navi Mumbai, and nearby industrial hubs.
In Mumbai, the ambitious Metro Line 11 project has been approved. This will be a 16-km fully underground corridor from Wadala Depot to Gateway of India, passing through key locations like Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Chowk and Horniman Circle. Estimated at around ₹24,000 crore, the project will be funded with assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The line is expected to provide major relief to Mumbaikars from traffic congestion. Additionally, a commercial complex will be developed jointly with BEST, which will help generate additional revenue for the transport body.
Nagpur too is set to witness rapid development, with approval granted for a new ring road and the creation of a new township.
The Cabinet Infrastructure Committee meeting, chaired by CM Devendra Fadnavis, was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Medical Education Minister Hasan Mushrif, Water Resources Minister Girish Mahajan, Chief Secretary Rajesh Kumar, along with senior administrative officials.
