Trump Nominates Sergio Gor as Next US Ambassador to India
New York/Washington, Aug 2025 — US President Donald Trump has nominated his longtime aide Sergio Gor, 38, as the next United States Ambassador to India. Gor, currently serving as Director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office, will also take on the role of Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs once confirmed by the Senate.
Announcing the nomination on social media Friday, Trump described Gor as a “great friend” who has been “at my side for many years.” He praised Gor’s leadership in overseeing the hiring of nearly 4,000 officials across federal departments and agencies, noting that “over 95 percent of positions are now filled in record time.”
Trump emphasized Gor’s close association with him over the years, saying: “Gor has worked on my historic presidential campaigns, published my best-selling books, and ran one of the biggest Super PACs supporting our movement. For the most populous region in the world, it is important that I have someone I can fully trust to deliver on my agenda. Sergio will make an incredible Ambassador. Congratulations, Sergio!”
The nomination comes against the backdrop of ongoing tariff tensions between Washington and New Delhi, making the ambassadorial post a strategically significant one.
Gor responded with gratitude, writing on social media that he was “beyond grateful” for Trump’s trust and confidence. “It will be the honour of my life to represent the United States as Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs,” he said.
Vice President JD Vance also congratulated Gor, saying he “will make a fantastic ambassador for our country to India.”
If confirmed, Gor will succeed Eric Garcetti, who served as US Ambassador to India from May 2023 until January 2025. Until then, Gor will continue in his current White House role.
The appointment reflects Trump’s preference for trusted insiders in key diplomatic positions as he seeks to strengthen ties with New Delhi while navigating trade frictions and broader regional challenges.
