Successful Implementation of Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana in Maharashtra

Mumbai, Aug 2025: Ensuring proper nutrition and health care for pregnant and lactating mothers is essential for building a healthier next generation. To encourage maternal health and promote a positive outlook towards the birth of daughters, the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) is being implemented by the Department of Women and Child Development through the Integrated Child Development Project. The scheme has been progressing successfully in the state, contributing to maternal well-being, family happiness, societal growth, and overall state development.

Under PMMVY, district nodal officers across 36 districts, child development project officers, and field-level supervisors have been fully mapped—achieving 100% coverage. For the current year, 40,000 registrations have been completed, with the remaining targets expected to be achieved soon. The Central Government has set a target of 5.7 lakh beneficiaries for 2025–26, which is being pursued in a time-bound and planned manner. Efforts are underway to meet eligibility requirements and ensure pending women beneficiaries receive their entitled benefits. Additionally, since 2017, special efforts have been made to reach women who had not availed of the scheme, with the help of Anganwadi workers and ASHA volunteers.

The scheme, initially launched by the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development, has been implemented by the Public Health Department in Maharashtra since 2017. Till date, 46,29,119 women in the state have benefited from it. Across 36 districts, 553 Child Development Project Officers and 3,899 supervisors at the block level have been trained, achieving 100% mapping, with Anganwadi-level mapping to be completed shortly.

The objectives of the scheme include:

  • Providing nutritious food to pregnant and lactating mothers.
  • Offering wage compensation for loss of income during pregnancy.
  • Encouraging a positive attitude toward the birth of daughters by providing an additional incentive if the second child is a girl.

Financial assistance under PMMVY includes ₹3,000 during pregnancy for antenatal check-ups within six months of registration, followed by ₹2,000 after the child’s birth registration—totaling ₹5,000 for the first child. If the second child is a girl, an additional incentive of ₹6,000 is provided.

Eligibility extends to households with an annual income below ₹8 lakh, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, persons with disabilities (40% or more), BPL ration card holders, Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY beneficiaries, e-Shram card holders, farmers under PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi, MGNREGA job card holders, as well as pregnant and lactating Anganwadi workers, helpers, and ASHA workers. Beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act, 2013, are also covered.

To apply, eligible women can contact their nearest Anganwadi center, primary health center, sub-district, or district hospital.
