PM Modi Meets Myanmar’s Min Aung Hlaing in Tianjin, Reaffirms Support for Development and Peace
Tianjin, Sept 2025 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Myanmar’s State Security and Peace Commission Chairman, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, on Sunday on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin. The two leaders reviewed the state of bilateral relations and discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in key sectors.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), discussions covered trade, development partnership, defence and security, and border management. PM Modi reiterated India’s readiness to support Myanmar’s developmental needs and emphasized the importance of the bilateral relationship under India’s Neighbourhood First, Act East, and Indo-Pacific policies.
In a statement, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said: “The leaders reviewed India-Myanmar ties and discussed the way forward on several aspects of bilateral cooperation. Prime Minister reiterated India’s readiness to support the developmental needs of Myanmar.”
PM Modi also expressed hope that Myanmar’s forthcoming elections will be conducted in a fair and inclusive manner, involving all stakeholders. He underlined that India supports a “Myanmar-led and Myanmar-owned peace process,” stressing that dialogue and consultation remain the only viable path to long-term peace and stability.
Connectivity and regional integration were another focus of the talks. “Prime Minister stressed that progress on ongoing connectivity projects would foster greater interaction between the people of the two countries, while promoting regional cooperation and integration as envisioned in India’s Act East policy,” the MEA noted.
The meeting comes at a critical juncture as Myanmar navigates political challenges at home. India, which shares both land and maritime borders with Myanmar, has consistently highlighted the strategic importance of stability in the neighbouring country for peace and security in the wider region.
This was the first bilateral meeting between PM Modi and Senior General Min Aung Hlaing since Modi assumed office for a third term. Their last interaction took place in April 2024 on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok.
