Delhi Court Defers Bail Hearing of BMW Accident Accused Gaganpreet Kaur to September 24

New Delhi, Sept 2025 : A Delhi court on Saturday adjourned the bail hearing of Gaganpreet Kaur, the prime accused in the recent BMW fatal accident case, to September 24, after police sought more time to seize her mobile phone and driving licence.

Judicial Magistrate Ankit Garg was informed by the investigating officers that the probe is still at an early stage, and granting bail at this juncture would hinder the investigation. Opposing Kaur’s plea, the prosecution argued that her mobile phone, allegedly used to contact family members immediately after the crash, is a crucial piece of evidence.

“We have not yet recovered the mobile phone and driving licence of the accused,” the prosecution told the court.

Kaur’s defence counsel countered, stating that her phone is currently with her husband and would be handed over to the police by Saturday evening. Regarding the licence, he said it had already been submitted earlier but, if misplaced, the family would provide it again.

Kaur was arrested in connection with the death of Navjot Singh, Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, and the grievous injuries sustained by his wife, Sandeep Kaur, in the September 14 accident. The incident occurred near Dhaula Kuan, close to Delhi Cantt Metro Station, when the couple’s motorcycle was hit by a speeding BMW allegedly driven by Kaur. Her husband, Parikshit, was reportedly in the passenger seat at the time of the collision.

The tragic crash, which took place around 1 p.m. while the victims were returning from Bangla Sahib Gurdwara, has sparked public outrage over reckless driving and the alleged misuse of luxury vehicles on city roads.

In a parallel development, the court also issued notice to the police on an application filed by Kaur, requesting the preservation of CCTV footage from the accident site. However, the court observed on Thursday that there is no legal provision mandating the sharing of CCTV footage with the accused during the investigation stage.

Police have registered a case under sections of the Indian Penal Code, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, as well as rash and negligent driving. Investigators are also probing whether there were any attempts to tamper with evidence following the accident.

With the bail plea now deferred, the case will be closely watched in the coming days as investigators attempt to piece together critical evidence.
