RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat Calls for Unity, Self-Reliance, and Vigilance in Centenary Vijayadashami Address

Nagpur, Oct 2025 : Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Sarsanghchalak Dr. Mohan Bhagwat, in his Vijayadashami address at the organisation’s headquarters in Nagpur, stressed the need for self-reliance, national unity, and vigilance against internal and external threats. Delivering his speech at the Reshimbagh Ground, Bhagwat highlighted that while interdependence between nations is inevitable, such reliance must never become a compulsion.

Pointing to the recently imposed import tariffs by the United States, Bhagwat observed that global policies often reflect national self-interest but carry far-reaching consequences. “The import tariff policy recently implemented by the US for its own selfish interests will definitely force us to reconsider some aspects. Dependency should not be forced. The world runs on interdependence. However, it is necessary to live a self-reliant life, keeping in mind the unity of global life. There is no other option than indigenous self-reliance to reduce our dependence on other countries,” he said.

Emphasis on Swadeshi and Aatmanirbhar Bharat

Bhagwat reiterated that Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) does not mean rejecting imports altogether, but rather giving priority to domestic production to strengthen resilience in trade and industry. He argued that self-reliance was not only an economic necessity but also a strategic safeguard. “Swadeshi is non-negotiable. Trade policies must align with our national ideals, resources, and needs,” he added, cautioning against excessive foreign direct investment (FDI) in low-tech sectors where India can independently excel.

Warning Against Internal and External Threats

Addressing national security concerns, Bhagwat said that India must remain vigilant in the face of global instability, terrorism, and attempts to destabilise democratically elected governments worldwide. He cited the recent Pahalgam terror attack, in which 26 innocent people were killed after being asked about their religion, as a grim reminder of the dangers India faces.

“The reactions of various countries to the attack, and India’s strong retaliation under ‘Operation Sindoor,’ made it clear who our true friends are and who are not,” Bhagwat said. He hailed the bravery of India’s armed forces and the government’s decisive response while stressing that constant vigilance and enhanced security preparedness were vital for the future.

He also cautioned against unconstitutional and disruptive elements within the country that seek to divide society along lines of caste, region, and language. “These elements will be addressed, but society and the administration must also concentrate on development so that extremism finds no space to thrive,” he noted.

Climate Change and Himalayan Fragility

Turning to environmental concerns, Bhagwat highlighted the increasing frequency of erratic weather events in India, particularly in the Himalayan region. Referring to cloudbursts, landslides, and the drying of glaciers in Uttarakhand and other Himalayan states, he warned: “Much of South Asia’s water comes from the Himalayas. The occurrence of these disasters in the Himalayas is a warning sign for India and neighbouring countries.”

He called for proactive measures to preserve ecological balance while strengthening disaster preparedness.

Call for Unity in Hindu Society

Reiterating the RSS’s long-standing emphasis on cultural unity, Bhagwat appealed to Hindu society to overcome internal divisions. “Some elements are trying to create differences in the name of language, region, and caste. We must remember that we are all part of one society. Our differences should not divide us,” he asserted.

He further warned against illegal migration and religious conversions, which he said could disturb India’s demographic balance and social harmony. “This is not just a legal issue but a matter of national security,” he said, urging citizens not to support or employ those who have entered the country unlawfully.

Systemic Reform and National Character

On the theme of governance, Bhagwat emphasised that reforms cannot succeed without corresponding changes in public consciousness. “If we want the system to change, society must first change. The system reflects the society that sustains it,” he remarked.

Quoting Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, he stressed that India’s unity is rooted in its inherent culture and shared civilisational values. Laws and institutions, he noted, must be guided by this cultural foundation to remain relevant and effective.

Clarifying RSS’s Role in Politics

Responding to common perceptions about the organisation’s political influence, Bhagwat clarified: “We do not dictate terms to any political party. Our role is to guide society, not to govern it.”

Centenary Celebrations and Dignitaries Present

This Vijayadashami also marked the beginning of the RSS’s centenary celebrations, commemorating 100 years since its founding by Dr. K.B. Hedgewar in 1925. Thousands of swayamsevaks gathered for the ceremonial march past and the RSS Prarthana at Reshimbagh Ground. The event was attended by several dignitaries, including former President Ram Nath Kovind, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Gandhiji’s Legacy and the Path Ahead

On the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary, Bhagwat paid tribute to the Father of the Nation, noting his invaluable contribution to India’s freedom struggle. He called upon citizens to imbibe Gandhian values of integrity, discipline, and service while strengthening India’s civic and moral fabric.

As the RSS enters its second century, Bhagwat urged swayamsevaks and the wider society to embrace change while remaining rooted in tradition. “The world is changing rapidly. We must evolve, but never lose sight of our values,” he said.
