OpenAI Strikes $38 Billion, Seven-Year Cloud Deal With Amazon AWS to Scale Next-Gen AI
Nov 2025 : OpenAI has entered into a landmark $38 billion, seven-year cloud infrastructure partnership with Amazon Web Services, marking one of the largest cloud deals in the history of artificial intelligence. The agreement, announced Monday, gives the ChatGPT maker access to massive computing resources as it races to scale its next generation of frontier AI models.
Under the deal, OpenAI will tap into hundreds of thousands of Nvidia GPUs hosted on AWS, as well as tens of millions of traditional CPUs used to deploy agentic AI systems in real-world applications. The GPU access, in particular, is critical, as Nvidia’s chips remain the backbone of the global generative AI boom.
Despite being partly owned by Microsoft — Amazon’s primary cloud competitor — OpenAI emphasized the strategic importance of diversifying its compute partners. “Scaling frontier AI requires massive, reliable compute,” said CEO Sam Altman. “Our partnership with AWS strengthens a broad compute ecosystem that will power the next era and bring advanced AI to everyone.”
OpenAI is expected to begin consuming AWS capacity immediately, with full utilization projected by the end of 2026. The agreement also includes room for further expansion as OpenAI’s compute needs accelerate.
The AWS contract adds to a staggering wave of infrastructure spending by OpenAI in 2025. Industry analysts estimate the company has already committed around $1 trillion in long-term compute deals this year, including a $300 billion agreement with Oracle and a $500 billion megaproject known as “Stargate,” backed by Oracle and SoftBank.
While OpenAI’s 2025 revenues are expected to reach tens of billions of dollars, the figure remains far below the cost of powering and training its cutting-edge models. The new AWS partnership is the first major deal signed since the company adopted a more flexible corporate structure, allowing it to pursue profit-oriented ventures while moving beyond its nonprofit origins.
The companies already collaborate on certain open-source AI systems available through Amazon’s ecosystem. The latest agreement significantly expands that relationship, positioning AWS as a major pillar of OpenAI’s long-term compute strategy.
