NDA Takes Early Lead as Counting Begins for Bihar Assembly Elections
Patna, Nov 2025 : The counting of votes for all 243 constituencies in the Bihar Assembly elections began on Friday, with early trends indicating a significant lead for the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) over the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance).
The counting process commenced at 8 a.m., starting with the scrutiny of postal ballots. This was followed by the opening of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) at 8:30 a.m. The exercise is being carried out under tight, multi-layered security arrangements across all counting centres in the state.
According to the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) initial trends at 9 a.m., the BJP was leading in several key constituencies, including Aurai, Sahebganj, Baruraj, Digha and Rajnagar. Meanwhile, the RJD registered early leads in Baniapur and Danapur.
Candidates from both major alliances expressed confidence about securing a victory. The NDA maintained that the people of Bihar had once again placed their trust in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s development agenda and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s governance record. Conversely, the Mahagathbandhan claimed that the electorate had voted for change and would hand them a clear mandate.
Minister Ashok Chaudhary asserted, “Some people have voted to reject ‘Jungle Raj 2’ and to bring Nitish Kumar back. We will get a clear majority.”
RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav also exuded optimism, saying, “Change will happen, a government will be formed,” reflecting his belief that voters had endorsed his vision for the state.
The counting process is being meticulously supervised by 243 Returning Officers and an equal number of Counting Observers appointed by the Election Commission. Additionally, more than 18,000 counting agents representing various candidates are stationed across centres to monitor the proceedings.
Strict protocols are in place to ensure transparency and order. Only individuals with valid passes may enter the counting centres, and the use of mobile phones inside counting halls is strictly prohibited.
The state witnessed robust voter participation, with over 7 crore voters casting their ballots across two phases held on November 6 and 11. The outcome will decide the political fate of the ruling NDA and the Mahagathbandhan, both of which campaigned aggressively across the state.
In the outgoing Legislative Assembly, the NDA holds 131 seats—comprising the BJP’s 80, JD(U)’s 45, HAM(S)’s 4, and two Independents. The Opposition currently accounts for 111 seats, including the RJD’s 77, Congress’ 19, CPI(ML)’s 11, CPI(M)’s 2 and CPI’s 2.
As counting progresses, all eyes remain on Bihar to see whether the ruling coalition retains power or the Mahagathbandhan succeeds in securing a dramatic shift in the state’s political landscape.
