Percolation Tank Increases Yield, Enables Vegetable and Fish Farming

Raipur, Nov 2025 : A percolation tank constructed under MGNREGA has transformed the life of farmer Anand, son of Jagrup, a registered labourer from Gram Panchayat Aklasarai in Sonhat development block. Once dependent solely on rain-fed farming and unskilled labour work, the family has now become self-reliant through agriculture, vegetable cultivation, and fish farming. Anand built a private percolation tank on his land after receiving administrative approval of ₹1,99,000 on 21 December 2024.

Earlier, Limited Yield Due to Lack of Irrigation Facilities

Anand owns a total of 4 acres of land, but due to the lack of irrigation facilities, he was restricted to cultivating traditional paddy crops only. The shortage of water led to very low production, making it difficult for the family to even meet its basic food needs. The unskilled labour work available under MGNREGA was the primary source of income for the family.

Fish Farming Becomes an Additional Source of Income

After the construction of the private percolation tank (dabri) under MGNREGA, his 2.5 acres of land have begun producing bumper paddy crops. Anand has also started fish farming, which has become an additional source of income. Vegetable and pulse cultivation has further strengthened the family’s economic condition.

Rabi Crops Bring New Hopes

After a successful Kharif harvest, Anand has now sown Rabi crops such as arhar (pigeon pea), peas, mustard, tomatoes, and potatoes on one acre of land. With irrigation support and dedicated effort, he is hopeful of earning a good income this season.
