“Bird Survey 2026” Organized at Barnawapara Sanctuary, Over 200 Bird Species Recorded

Barnawapara Sanctuary, Chhattisgarh – Participants from 11 states of India took part in the “Bird Survey 2026” held at Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary from January 16 to 18, 2026. The survey recorded rich bird diversity, with data so far documenting around 202 bird species. The initiative aims to scientifically document biodiversity in the sanctuary, promote birding culture, and boost eco-tourism.

Around 70 participants from Maharashtra, Odisha, West Bengal, Telangana, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Kerala, and Karnataka took part, along with 12 volunteers, experts, and photographers, totaling nearly 100 people. The survey was not limited to Barnawapara Sanctuary alone but also extended to nearby areas including Kothari, Sonakhan, and Devpur. The bird data collected during the survey will contribute to global databases. It will help in scientific documentation of biodiversity, promote birding culture, and support eco-tourism in the region. Key experts participating in the survey included Dr. Hakimuddin F. Saifi, Dr. Jageshwar Verma, Mohit Sahu, and Mr. Sonu Arora.

Key Species Observed During the Survey – Some species drew particular attention from participants. Notably, the Bar-headed Goose, which breeds in the high Himalayas of Central Asia and winters in reservoirs and fields across South Asia, was a major highlight. Other attractions included the Grey-headed Lapwing, found in wetlands, paddy fields, marshy areas, and riverbanks; predatory birds like the Peregrine Falcon; the Blue-capped Rock Thrush; the Eurasian Sparrowhawk; and the Orange-breasted Green Pigeon, considered important for seed dispersal in forest ecosystems.

Regarding the survey, Forest Division Officer Ganveer Dhammashil said that Barnawapara represents the biodiversity of Central Chhattisgarh, with a mix of sal forests and various ecological landscapes. The data obtained from this survey will assist in identifying necessary management plans for the sanctuary, particularly for the conservation of bird species whose populations are declining.
