Patna, August 20, 2026: Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary participated in a programme organised under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G), marking the housewarming of 2.35 lakh houses completed during the financial year 2026-27. Keys to the newly completed houses were handed over to beneficiaries, while sanction letters were distributed to newly selected beneficiaries.
The programme was organised by the Rural Development Department at Bapu Sabhagar in the Samrat Ashok Convention Centre complex. The Chief Minister inaugurated the event by lighting the ceremonial lamp and planting saplings. A short film highlighting the achievements, progress and major initiatives under PMAY-G was also screened.
During the programme, Union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan handed over to Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary the target letter for the new PMAY-G allocation made to Bihar by the Central Government.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Choudhary described the occasion as a day of pride and honour for Bihar. He said the programme to provide pucca houses to poor families would give a new direction to the state’s development.
He pointed out that between 1986 and 2014, only around 30 lakh pucca houses were constructed for poor families in Bihar under the Indira Awas Yojana. In contrast, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, an allocation has already been made for the construction of 50 lakh pucca houses for poor families in Bihar between 2014 and 2026.
The Chief Minister said that a survey conducted in 2018 had identified around 19 lakh families who were still deprived of pucca houses. With the support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, these families are now also being brought under PMAY-G.
He said the Bihar government contributes 40 per cent of the financial assistance provided for houses constructed under the scheme.
For the financial year 2026-27, Bihar has been allocated a target of 11,18,937 pucca houses under PMAY-G. The Central Government will provide financial assistance of approximately ₹13,427 crore for achieving this target. The Chief Minister expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Modi and Minister Chouhan for the support.
Choudhary said a pucca house provides families not only with shelter and security but also with dignity, confidence and renewed hope. He stressed that the benefits of development must reach every deserving person and said every family should have a permanent home for India to become a developed nation and Bihar a prosperous state.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the state government's ‘Sahayog Programme’, aimed at ensuring justice for citizens and providing a clear mechanism for officials to resolve applications. Under the initiative, applications are required to be disposed of within 30 days. Action is taken against officials found responsible for failing to comply with the prescribed timelines.
According to the Chief Minister, more than 6.42 lakh applications have been received under the Sahayog Programme so far, of which around 96 per cent have already been disposed of. Notices have been issued to 9,500 officials as part of the accountability mechanism, including first notices to 9,500 officials, second notices to 950 and third notices to 350 officials.
Choudhary also highlighted the achievements of women’s self-help groups in Bihar. He said around 1.81 crore Jeevika women are associated with self-help groups in the state, with more than 30 lakh women having become ‘Lakhpati Didis’.
He urged the Central Government to organise special campaigns and ensure dedicated market spaces at major religious and historical tourist destinations such as Nalanda, Buxar, Bhagalpur and Motihari, enabling Jeevika women to sell their products and increase their income.
The Chief Minister said Bihar was receiving substantial support from the Centre for development and requested Union Rural Development Minister Chouhan to continue visiting the state and extending cooperation to make its rural areas better planned and developed.
Chouhan praised the Bihar government's rural development initiatives and appreciated the Sahayog Programme, suggesting that other states could also adopt the model. Referring to women's empowerment in Bihar, he said the annual income of Jeevika women in several cases has crossed ₹1 lakh.
The programme was also addressed by Deputy Chief Minister Vijendra Prasad Yadav, Rural Development Minister Shravan Kumar and Additional Chief Secretary, Rural Development Department, H.R. Srinivas.
Several ministers, senior officials, public representatives, beneficiaries and their family members attended the programme.
