Jabalpur/Bhopal, Sept 2026 : The Madhya Pradesh High Court on Tuesday deferred consideration of the bail plea filed by former district judge Giribala Singh, who is currently in custody in connection with the death of her daughter-in-law, model-actress Twisha Sharma.
A single bench of Justice Ajay Kumar Nirankari heard arguments from both sides and directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is probing the case, to file its response to the bail application. The agency was granted one week to submit its reply, following which the matter will be heard again.
Giribala Singh will continue to remain in custody until the next hearing.
Appearing for the former judge, senior advocate Surendra Singh sought bail, citing her age and health condition. The defence argued that Singh had not committed any act that would make her liable for the alleged offence and that there was no material to establish that she had instigated her daughter-in-law to die by suicide.
The defence also assured the court that Giribala Singh would fully cooperate with the investigation if released on bail and would comply with any conditions imposed by the court.
The CBI sought a week’s time to respond to the bail plea, stating that it wanted to place the case diary before the court. According to the defence counsel, the investigating agency has also filed its objections to the bail application.
After considering the submissions, the High Court granted the CBI the requested time and posted the matter for hearing after a week. The court is expected to consider the agency’s response and the case diary before deciding the bail application.
Twisha Sharma died under suspicious circumstances at her in-laws’ residence in the Katara Hills area of Bhopal on May 12. Her family subsequently alleged foul play and sought a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
The case was later taken up by the CBI, which has been investigating the allegations and circumstances surrounding Twisha’s death.
In August, the agency filed a 636-page charge sheet against Twisha’s husband, Samarth Singh, and her mother-in-law, Giribala Singh. The charge sheet forms part of the CBI’s investigation into the circumstances leading to Twisha’s death.
The allegations against the accused are subject to judicial proceedings, and the filing of a charge sheet does not by itself establish guilt.
Advocate Anurag Panday, who represents Twisha’s family before the High Court, said the next hearing would be significant as the court is expected to examine the CBI’s response along with the case diary before proceeding with the bail plea.
For now, the former district judge remains in custody as the court awaits the investigating agency’s response. The next hearing is expected to provide further clarity on the arguments advanced by the CBI against bail and the defence’s grounds for seeking Giribala Singh’s release.
