Tata Group Stocks Lose Rs 68,000 Crore as Chandrasekaran Exit Triggers Sell-Off

Mumbai, Aug 2026 : Shares of several Tata Group companies came under heavy selling pressure on Wednesday after N. Chandrasekaran decided not to seek an extension as chairman of Tata Sons, resulting in a sharp erosion of the conglomerate’s overall market value.

The combined market capitalisation of the group’s 17 listed companies declined by Rs 68,119 crore, falling to around Rs 26.32 lakh crore from nearly Rs 27 lakh crore in the previous trading session. The sell-off reflected investor concerns following the unexpected development at the holding company.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) was the biggest contributor to the decline. The IT major’s market capitalisation fell by Rs 42,440 crore to Rs 8.40 lakh crore after its shares dropped 4.79 per cent to Rs 2,323.30 on the exchange.

Titan Company emerged as the second-largest drag on the group's valuation. Its market capitalisation declined by Rs 9,304 crore, with the stock falling nearly 2 per cent during the session.

Other major Tata companies also witnessed significant erosion in market value. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles lost Rs 4,898 crore, while Tata Steel saw its market capitalisation decline by Rs 4,745 crore.

Tata Consumer Products shed Rs 3,098 crore in market value. Tata Power and Indian Hotels declined by Rs 1,598 crore and Rs 1,566 crore, respectively.

The selling extended to several other group companies. Tata Communications lost Rs 812 crore in market capitalisation, while Trent declined by Rs 907 crore. Tata Elxsi shed Rs 606 crore, Tata Investment Corporation lost Rs 508 crore and Tejas Networks saw its market value fall by Rs 265 crore.

Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) also ended lower, adding to the broad-based pressure across Tata Group stocks.

However, the sell-off was not uniform. A few Tata companies managed to register gains during the session. Tata Motors added Rs 1,786 crore to its market value, while Tata Capital gained Rs 700 crore. Tata Chemicals and Voltas also recorded modest increases of Rs 167 crore and Rs 66 crore, respectively.

The market reaction followed Chandrasekaran’s decision not to seek an extension of his tenure as chairman of Tata Sons. The decision came after a board member opposed the proposal for his reappointment, leading to uncertainty over the leadership transition at the group’s holding company.

Explaining his decision, Chandrasekaran said the prolonged uncertainty surrounding the matter made it necessary for the board to proceed with succession planning.

In a statement, Chandrasekaran said he had completed four decades of professional life within the Tata Group and described his nearly 10-year tenure as chairman of Tata Sons as a privilege as well as a significant responsibility.

His departure marks a major leadership transition for the Tata Group and comes at a time when investors are closely watching the conglomerate’s strategy, performance and succession plans. The sharp movement in several Tata stocks on Wednesday indicated the sensitivity of markets to developments surrounding the group’s top leadership.
