USCIS to Introduce New Green Card Application Form from September 18

USCIS to Introduce New Green Card Application Form from September 18

Washington, Aug 2026 : The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will introduce a revised application form for permanent residence next month, cautioning applicants that the current version will no longer be accepted once the new edition takes effect.

The agency said the updated Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status, will be published on September 18, 2026. The form is used by eligible individuals already in the United States to apply for lawful permanent resident status, commonly known as a Green Card.

The change is expected to attract particular attention among Indian nationals pursuing employment- or family-based permanent residence in the US. Many Indian applicants, particularly highly skilled professionals, face lengthy waits for immigrant visa numbers because of annual limits and country-based restrictions.

According to USCIS, the new Form I-485 will carry an edition date of September 18, 2026, replacing the current edition dated January 20, 2025.

The agency has released a preview of the revised form along with updated instructions for applicants and immigration attorneys. USCIS has specifically warned that there will be no transition or grace period during which both editions can be used.

This means applicants will need to carefully check the edition date before submitting their applications. USCIS will continue accepting the January 20, 2025, version if it is postmarked or electronically submitted before September 18.

However, applications filed using the older edition on or after September 18 will be rejected. At the same time, applicants should not attempt to use the new September 18, 2026, edition before the effective date. USCIS said the revised version will be accepted only for applications postmarked or electronically submitted on or after September 18.

The strict transition timeline makes the filing date especially important for applicants, employers and immigration lawyers. Using an incorrect version of the form could result in the application being rejected without USCIS proceeding to evaluate the case on its merits.

USCIS said the revised Form I-485 has been developed to bring the adjustment-of-status process in line with a recently announced final rule concerning the public-charge ground of inadmissibility.

The public-charge provision relates to determining whether an immigration applicant is likely to become primarily dependent on the US government for subsistence. The issue has undergone changes under different US administrations and has remained a significant and sometimes controversial component of American immigration policy.

The latest USCIS notification did not announce a separate change to the filing fee or eligibility requirements for Form I-485. Applicants have instead been advised to consult the agency's official Form I-485 webpage for the preview version, filing requirements and detailed instructions.

The development is particularly relevant to Indian professionals working in sectors such as information technology, medicine, engineering and other specialised industries. Indian nationals represent a substantial share of employment-based immigration applicants, with many facing extended Green Card backlogs.

Eligible applicants who file Form I-485 may also be able to apply for associated employment authorisation and travel documents while their permanent residence applications remain pending, subject to applicable requirements.

With the September 18 deadline approaching, immigration attorneys are expected to advise applicants to carefully verify the form edition, filing method and submission date before submitting their applications to avoid rejection over a technical error.
