Sanju Samson Becomes Fastest Indian to 5,000 IPL Runs, Achieves Landmark in Style
Chennai, April 2026: Sanju Samson scripted history in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 by becoming the fastest Indian batter, in terms of balls faced, to reach the coveted milestone of 5,000 runs. The landmark moment came during a high-profile clash between Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday.
The 31-year-old reached the milestone in emphatic fashion, striking a boundary off South African pacer Kagiso Rabada in the second over of the innings. However, the pacer quickly bounced back, dismissing Samson for 11 runs off 15 balls in the fourth over, slightly overshadowing the celebratory moment.
Despite the early dismissal, Samson’s achievement stands as a testament to his consistency and longevity in the league. He reached the 5,000-run mark in just 3,555 balls, making him the quickest Indian to do so in terms of deliveries faced. Overall, he became the 10th batter in IPL history to cross the milestone, achieving it in 180 innings across 185 matches. Globally, only a handful of elite players have reached the landmark faster, with AB de Villiers leading the list.
Samson’s IPL journey began in 2013, and over the years, he has emerged as one of the most dependable and stylish batters in the tournament. He has represented franchises like Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals (formerly Delhi Daredevils), and Chennai Super Kings, while also serving as captain of Rajasthan Royals.
By entering the 5,000-run club, Samson joins an elite group of cricketers that includes Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, David Warner, K. L. Rahul, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni, and Ajinkya Rahane.
His IPL numbers further underline his impact: 5,008 runs at an average of 31.69 and a strike rate of 140.59, including 31 half-centuries and five centuries. Notably, three of his centuries have come while batting at No. 3 or lower, showcasing his adaptability.
Samson’s strongest association remains with Rajasthan Royals, where he has scored over 4,000 runs, becoming the first player to achieve that feat for the franchise. His consistency has only improved with time, highlighted by a stellar 2024 season in which he amassed 531 runs at an average of 48.27—his first 500-plus season.
In IPL 2026, Samson has continued his fine form, scoring 304 runs in eight matches at an impressive average of 50.67 and a striking rate nearing 170. Both his half-centuries this season have been converted into centuries, underlining his ability to play match-winning knocks.
Across all T20 cricket, Samson has accumulated 8,704 runs in 338 matches, with eight centuries and 54 fifties, cementing his reputation as one of the most reliable and dynamic batters in modern-day cricket.
