Iran Signals New Framework for Strait of Hormuz, Calls for “Future Without America” in Persian Gulf
Tehran, April 2026 : Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei on Thursday declared that a “new chapter” is emerging in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, asserting that an upcoming legal and administrative framework for the strategic waterway will ensure progress and stability for regional nations.
In a message released on the occasion of the National Day of the Persian Gulf, Khamenei emphasized Iran’s historical role in defending the region’s independence and resisting foreign intervention. He described the Islamic Revolution as a “turning point” in confronting external powers and safeguarding regional sovereignty.
He said the Persian Gulf has long been targeted by what he termed “foreign aggressors,” particularly European and American powers, accusing them of repeatedly causing insecurity and instability in the region over centuries. According to him, these actions reflect “malicious schemes” aimed at controlling one of the world’s most strategic maritime corridors.
New Governance Framework for Strait of Hormuz
Khamenei stated that the proposed new legal framework and management system for the Strait of Hormuz would enhance economic development, regional cooperation, and comfort for all neighboring countries.
He said this restructuring would ensure that the benefits of the waterway are shared more fairly among regional states, contributing to long-term prosperity and stability.
“The future of the Persian Gulf will be bright, free of America, and dedicated to peace, progress, and prosperity of its nations,” he said.
He further stressed that countries bordering the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman share a “common destiny,” adding that external powers located thousands of kilometers away have no legitimate role in the region’s affairs.
Strong Criticism of US Presence
Khamenei strongly criticized the presence of the United States in the Persian Gulf, calling it the “main source of insecurity” in the region.
He argued that American military bases in the region are incapable of ensuring even their own security, let alone protecting allied nations.
According to him, foreign military involvement has only contributed to instability rather than peace.
He reiterated that regional security should be managed exclusively by the countries of the Persian Gulf, without outside interference.
Iran’s Strategic and Scientific Position
In his message, Khamenei also highlighted Iran’s advancements in science and technology, describing them as national assets that must be protected and developed.
He said Iran considers its achievements in nuclear technology, missile development, nanotechnology, and biotechnology as part of its collective national heritage.
He stated that approximately 90 million Iranians, both inside and outside the country, view these capabilities alongside identity, culture, scientific innovation, and industrial progress as shared national wealth.
He added that Iran will continue to safeguard its territorial, maritime, and air boundaries while also protecting its technological achievements.
Call for Regional Self-Reliance
Khamenei emphasized that the Persian Gulf region should rely on its own capabilities rather than foreign powers. He said Iran remains committed to ensuring the security of the Strait of Hormuz and preventing what he called “external exploitation” of this vital waterway.
He also asserted that regional countries should work together to manage shared resources and security without reliance on distant global powers.
Vision for the Future
Concluding his message, the Iranian Supreme Leader expressed confidence that the future of the Persian Gulf will be shaped by regional cooperation, self-reliance, and independence from foreign influence.
He described this future as one focused on development, economic prosperity, and stability for all nations of the region.
According to him, the evolving geopolitical landscape will ultimately lead to a “future without America” in the Persian Gulf, where regional states take full control of their security and development priorities.
The statement reflects Iran’s continued push for regional autonomy in security and governance of one of the world’s most strategically important maritime corridors.
