Thane, May 2026: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde inaugurated the first electric double-decker bus in Thane city, marking a significant step toward improving urban transport. The inauguration took place in the presence of senior officials and public representatives.
On the occasion, Shinde himself took a ride in the newly launched bus from the Municipal Corporation headquarters to Louiswadi and back, highlighting the comfort and convenience it offers. He stated that the introduction of this double-decker electric bus would make commuting more comfortable and pleasant for the residents of Thane.
Several dignitaries were present at the event, including Mayor Sharmila Pimpalolkar, Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao, District Collector Dr. Shrikrishna Panchal, and Deputy Mayor Krishna Patil.
The buses are being introduced under the Gross Cost Contract (GCC) model, ensuring that there is no additional financial burden on the municipal transport service. The double-decker bus has a seating capacity of 65 passengers, with space for an additional 33 standing commuters, allowing it to carry nearly 100 passengers at a time.
Currently, the bus will operate on the route between Teen Haath Naka and Gaymukh. Being fully electric, the service is expected to provide an eco-friendly travel option for commuters while also reducing pollution levels in the city. Authorities have also announced that nine more such buses will soon be added to the transport fleet, further enhancing public transport infrastructure in Thane.
