President Donald Trump Suspends ‘Project Freedom’ In Hormuz As Talks Gain Ground; China Steps In.
Washington DC; May 2026: US President Donald Trump has claimed that “great progress” had been made in negotiations with Iran towards a possible agreement to end the conflict, even as China stepped up diplomatic engagement with Tehran amid mounting tensions over the Strait of Hormuz. Trump announced the temporary suspension of “Project Freedom”, which was a US led naval escort operation launched earlier this week to move stranded ships through the Strait of Hormuz after Iran’s blockade disrupted global shipping.
“Great progress has been made toward a complete and final agreement with representatives of Iran”, Trump said, adding that the decision to pause the operation was taken after requests from Pakistan and other countries, as well as ongoing diplomatic efforts.
“While the blockade will remain in full force and effect, Project Freedom, will be paused for a short period of time to see whether or not the Agreement can be finalised and signed”, he said. Project Freedom was launched on 04th May 2026 after commercial vessels were stranded due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime route through which nearly one-fifth of global oil supplies pass.
The US Central Command had begun implementing the operation a day after Trump announced it. Trump’s remarks came hours after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said major American military operations against Iran had ended under “Operation Epic Fury”, launched on February 28.
Against this backdrop, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Beijing today (06th May, Wednesday), signalling Beijing’s growing diplomatic role in the crisis. Chinese state media said the two leaders discussed the situation arising from the US blockade of Iranian ports, which Washington imposed to pressure Tehran into reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
Araghchi’s one-day visit to Beijing is his first since the US-Iran conflict escalated. It also comes just a week before Trump is scheduled to visit China from May 14 to 15 for talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, with trade and regional security expected to dominate the agenda. China remains Iran’s closest strategic partner and the biggest buyer of Iranian crude oil, giving Beijing a major stake in any resolution to the crisis.
