Suvendu Adhikari Calls BJP Win a ‘Real Change’, Slams TMC Rule in West Bengal

Kolkata, May 2026 : In a sharp political statement following the West Bengal Assembly election results, Suvendu Adhikari launched a strong attack on the outgoing Trinamool Congress (TMC) government led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, describing its rule as “even worse” than the earlier CPM regime and calling the BJP’s victory a “real change” for the state.

Adhikari, who secured victories from both Nandigram and Bhabanipur, visited Nandigram on Wednesday to thank voters. He said the constituency had consistently supported him over the years, electing him multiple times as an MLA and previously as a Member of Parliament.

“I had come here to express gratitude to the people. They have elected me as MP twice and three times as an MLA,” he told reporters, adding that his bond with the people of Nandigram would remain “for a lifetime.”

The BJP leader said his immediate focus would be on development and fulfilling public expectations. He also recalled his earlier electoral battle in Nandigram, where he had defeated Mamata Banerjee, crediting voters for what he described as a defining moment in state politics.

In the recently concluded elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a strong mandate with 207 seats in the 294-member Assembly, while the TMC was reduced to 80 seats, marking a significant shift in West Bengal’s political landscape.

Adhikari said the removal of the CPM in 2011 was necessary but alleged that the TMC government that followed had failed the people. “We never thought that an even worse dynasty government would come after CPM. That is why this time a real change has come,” he said.

He further claimed that the BJP’s victory represents the beginning of what he termed a “nationalist double-engine government,” which he said would bring development, progress, and improved governance to the state.

Adhikari also warned against law and order violations, stating that those involved in violence or unlawful activities would face strict legal action under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. “Nobody will be allowed to take the law into their own hands,” he said.

He alleged that during the election process, BJP workers faced significant hardships, including over 500 FIRs and the arrest of nearly 400 party workers. He urged supporters to maintain peace and refrain from celebrations for the next two days.

A formal thanksgiving programme, he added, would be organised only after receiving police permission once the new government is formed.

Looking ahead, Adhikari said the BJP’s governance agenda would focus on implementing promises made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the party’s election manifesto prepared under the guidance of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

“We will secure the border with Bangladesh and ensure women’s safety. Women will be able to move freely at any time without fear,” he said, outlining key priorities of the incoming administration.

As West Bengal prepares for a new political phase, Adhikari’s remarks highlight the deepening rivalry between the BJP and TMC, setting the tone for a highly charged post-election environment in the state.
