Manipur CM Assures Action After O Ibobi Singh Questions Security Lapses After Kamjong Border Violence.

Imphal; May 2026: Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee President O Ibobi Singh today has strongly questioned the response of security agencies following the recent violence in border villages of Kamjong district. Ibobi Singh has described the incident as a “very serious matter” while warning that continued instability could further deteriorate the law and order situation in the State. The attack, reported from the Indo-Myanmar border villages of Namlee, Z Choro and Wanglee in Kamjong district, has triggered fresh political criticism over security preparedness in the sensitive frontier region, even as Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh assured that strict action would be taken against those found responsible.

Reacting to the incident, former Chief Minister Ibobi Singh said the violence had exposed serious concerns regarding security deployment and response mechanisms in the border areas. “The unfortunate incident that took place in the border villages near the Indo-Myanmar border is a very serious matter. The affected areas are located close to Assam Rifles posts, yet such an attack still occurred. Therefore, both the Government of India and the State Government must take responsibility and explain their response”.

He has further alleged that repeated incidents of violence were making the situation in Manipur increasingly unstable. “One incident after another is making the situation in Manipur more dangerous and unstable. Sensitive border areas continue to remain vulnerable despite the presence of security forces, while only a few State police personnel are deployed in such regions. The governments cannot remain silent spectators while people continue to suffer”, he said.

The Congress leader also warned that unless immediate corrective measures were taken, similar incidents could recur in other vulnerable areas of the State. “What happened yesterday in Kamjong district could happen elsewhere as well if proper security measures are not taken immediately. The protection of life, property and security of the people is the responsibility of both the Central and State Governments. Despite repeated assurances regarding law and order, proper action has still not been taken against those responsible for violence and instability in the State”, Ibobi added.

Echoing similar concerns, local Congress leader from Kamjong, Victor Keishing, alleged that inadequate security arrangements in the border region contributed to the incident. “The incident occurred because only a few unarmed police personnel are usually posted in the border areas. Despite the sensitivity of the region and repeated concerns raised by local residents, adequate security deployment has not been ensured”.

Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh yesterday (07th May) evening has strongly condemned the violence and asserted that the Government was closely monitoring the evolving situation. “I strongly condemn the violence reported this morning in the border villages of Namlee, Z Choro and Wanglee in Kamjong district. Such acts are deeply concerning and unacceptable”. He stated that security forces had been directed to take all necessary measures to restore peace and prevent further escalation in the affected region. “The Government remains committed in ensuring the safety and security of all citizens, and strict action will be taken against those responsible”, he added.

In the wake of the disturbances, the Chief Minister also held a series of high-level meetings with security officials and legislators to assess the prevailing law and order situation in the State. According to the Chief Minister’s Office, DIG BSF Koirengei Suvvender Kumar and Commandant of 64 Battalion BSF Pankaj Kumar met him at the Secretariat, where discussions focused on the emerging security challenges and the need for a coordinated response mechanism.

“Reviewed the prevailing law and order situation and deliberated on measures to address emerging challenges in view of recent disturbances, with emphasis on coordinated and proactive response”, the Chief Minister has asserted after the meeting. Sources said the Chief Minister later chaired a Cabinet meeting and also held discussions with NDA legislators regarding the Kamjong violence and the broader security situation in Manipur.
