Gill, Sudharsan Power Gujarat Titans to Massive 229/4 Against Rajasthan Royals
Jaipur, May 2026 : Captain Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan produced scintillating half-centuries before a late assault from Washington Sundar powered Gujarat Titans to an imposing 229/4 against Rajasthan Royals in their IPL 2026 clash at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium on Saturday.
After being invited to bat first by Rajasthan Royals stand-in captain Yashasvi Jaiswal, Gujarat Titans came out all guns blazing on a batting-friendly Jaipur surface and dominated the innings from the very beginning.
The tone was set in a chaotic opening over from Jofra Archer, who conceded 18 runs, including nine extras. Sudharsan immediately capitalised on the loose bowling, timing his drives and cuts beautifully, while Gill settled quickly at the other end.
Rajasthan’s bowlers struggled badly for rhythm and control during the powerplay as Gujarat Titans raced to 82 without loss in the first six overs, equalling their highest-ever powerplay total in IPL history. Sudharsan looked particularly aggressive, punishing deliveries on his pads and attacking both pace and spin with confidence.
Gill soon joined the onslaught and took apart Archer in the fifth over, smashing the England pacer for a six and two boundaries to push the scoring rate even higher. The duo’s combination of elegant strokeplay and sharp running between the wickets kept the Rajasthan bowlers under relentless pressure.
The opening partnership crossed the 100-run mark in just 8.1 overs and entered the IPL record books as Gill and Sudharsan registered their sixth century stand as an opening pair in the tournament.
Rajasthan Royals finally managed a breakthrough in the 11th over when Yash Raj Punja dismissed Sudharsan, who miscued a lofted shot to long-on after a superb knock of 55 from 36 deliveries. His innings included six boundaries and two sixes and provided Gujarat with the ideal platform for a huge total.
Despite losing his opening partner, Gill continued to dominate proceedings with stylish batting all around the wicket. He brought up his fourth half-century of the season and maintained the momentum for Gujarat Titans.
Jos Buttler looked dangerous during his short stay at the crease, striking a six and a boundary before falling to Ravindra Jadeja for 13 runs.
Gill then shifted gears in the death overs and appeared set for a century before eventually falling for a magnificent 84 off just 44 balls. His innings was decorated with nine boundaries and three sixes and formed the backbone of Gujarat’s massive total.
Following Gill’s dismissal, Washington Sundar provided the late flourish with a powerful unbeaten cameo. The left-hander struck cleanly against both pace and spin, including back-to-back boundaries and sixes off Brijesh Sharma, and finished unbeaten on 37 from only 20 deliveries.
Rahul Tewatia added the finishing touches in the final over by smashing two sixes as Gujarat Titans collected 21 runs from the last six balls to finish with a daunting 229/4 in 20 overs.
For Rajasthan Royals, Jadeja emerged as the most economical bowler with figures of 1/34, while Yash Raj Punja and Brijesh Sharma claimed wickets. However, Rajasthan endured another disappointing outing with the ball, conceding a 200-plus total for the seventh time this season.
Brief Scores: Gujarat Titans 229/4 in 20 overs (Shubman Gill 84, Sai Sudharsan 55, Washington Sundar 37 not out; Ravindra Jadeja 1/34) against Rajasthan Royals.
