Stalin Backs Alliance Support to TVK, Says DMK Will Play Role of Constructive Opposition
Chennai, May 2026 : Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president M. K. Stalin on Saturday welcomed the decision of several alliance partners to support the Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in forming the next government, while affirming that the DMK would continue to function as a constructive and responsible Opposition in the state.
In a detailed statement addressed to party cadres and the people of Tamil Nadu, Stalin said the recently concluded Assembly election had delivered a fractured verdict, with no single party securing a clear majority on its own in the 234-member Assembly.
Although the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance failed to obtain the numbers required to retain power, Stalin said the alliance had still received significant support from the people across the state.
The former Chief Minister recalled that immediately after the declaration of results, he had publicly stated that the DMK would not create obstacles in the formation of a new government and would instead discharge its democratic responsibilities as a constructive Opposition inside and outside the Assembly.
Stalin said that during the meeting of newly elected DMK MLAs convened under his leadership, legislators had unanimously authorised him to take an appropriate political decision after consulting senior party leaders and alliance partners.
He stressed that in a situation where no political formation had initially secured the required majority, ensuring political stability and avoiding another election had become an important responsibility for all parties.
Welcoming the stand taken by several alliance partners, Stalin said he respected their decision to extend support to TVK while continuing to remain part of the DMK-led secular progressive alliance based on common ideological and policy principles.
The political developments came after parties such as the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), Congress, CPI and CPI(M) extended support to TVK, helping the Vijay-led party cross the majority mark needed to form the government.
Referring to the post-election political situation, Stalin noted that Congress MLAs who had contested as part of the alliance did not visit Anna Arivalayam, the DMK headquarters in Chennai, after the election results. He also observed that the Congress subsequently distanced itself from the DMK-led alliance.
At the same time, Stalin expressed gratitude to several leaders and parties that, according to him, stood firmly with the DMK during a politically difficult period. He specifically thanked Communist leaders R. Shanmugam and A. Veerapandian, VCK chief Thol. Thirumavalavan, IUML leader Kader Mohideen, MDMK general secretary Vaiko, DMDK general secretary Premalatha Vijayakanth, MMK leader M. H. Jawahirullah, KMDK founder E. R. Eswaran and Manithaneya Makkal Katchi leader Tamimun Ansari for their support.
Stalin further said that the DMK government had transformed Tamil Nadu over the past five years through several welfare measures and development initiatives benefiting various sections of society.
He urged the incoming government to continue welfare schemes meant for women, youth, students, children, government employees and marginalised communities so that the benefits already reaching people would continue without interruption.
Concluding his statement, Stalin extended his best wishes to the new TVK government expected to be formed in Tamil Nadu and expressed hope that the state’s development and welfare trajectory would continue in the coming years.
