Dewald Brevis Stars with 44 as CSK Post 180/7 Against SRH in IPL 2026 Clash

Chennai, May 2026 : Chennai Super Kings produced a strong batting effort led by Dewald Brevis, who struck a fluent 44-run knock, to post a competitive total of 180/7 in 20 overs against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Match 63 of the Indian Premier League 2026 season at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on Monday.

Asked to bat first on a typically challenging Chepauk surface, CSK began aggressively, with wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson setting the tone immediately. He launched the very first ball of the innings bowled by Nitish Kumar Reddy for a six and followed it up with two crisp boundaries in the same over, helping CSK collect 17 runs in the opening over.

The early momentum continued as Samson kept attacking SRH bowlers. In the next over, he struck Praful Hinge for three consecutive fours, showcasing intent and timing as CSK raced ahead in the Powerplay.

However, SRH captain Pat Cummins brought his side the first breakthrough. Samson attempted to continue his aggressive approach but edged one behind the wicket after scoring a quick 27 off just 13 deliveries, an innings that included four boundaries and a six.

Young batter Urvil Patel then carried forward the attacking approach, smashing Cummins for two towering sixes in a single over. But his innings was short-lived as Sakib Husain deceived him with a slower delivery in the fifth over, cleaning him up for 13 off 8 balls.

Despite losing two wickets early, CSK maintained their scoring rate through skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, who focused on stabilising the innings. He found able support from Kartik Sharma, and the duo began rebuilding with controlled aggression.

Kartik looked particularly confident, striking Praful Hinge for two boundaries and a six in the eighth over before adding another maximum in the next. Their partnership ensured CSK remained above a healthy run rate even after early setbacks.

SRH once again turned to Cummins for a breakthrough, and the move paid off in the 10th over as Kartik Sharma was dismissed for a well-made 32 off 19 balls, including three fours and two sixes. At the halfway stage, CSK were 91/3.

Cummins struck again soon after, removing Gaikwad, who struggled to accelerate during his 21-ball stay and managed only 15 runs. With this wicket, Cummins also reached the milestone of 200 wickets in T20 cricket, underlining his stature as one of the format’s leading fast bowlers.

Following the twin blows, CSK found stability through a crucial partnership between Shivam Dube and Dewald Brevis. Brevis immediately shifted gears, counterattacking the SRH bowling attack with authority and clean striking.

One of the defining moments of the innings came in the 14th over when Brevis took on Nitish Kumar Reddy, smashing 18 runs in the over as CSK crossed the 120-run mark. Dube complemented him well, playing calculated shots and later striking a six off Eshan Malinga in the 15th over.

Brevis continued to dominate, taking on Cummins in the 16th over with a four and a six as CSK surged to 144/4 after 16 overs. The partnership, however, ended in the 18th over when Eshan Malinga finally broke through, bowling Brevis for a well-crafted 44 off 27 balls. His innings included four sixes and two boundaries and proved crucial in setting up CSK’s final total.

SRH struck again in the next over when Sakib Husain dismissed Shivam Dube for 26 off 23 balls, an innings featuring three fours and a six. Despite the late wickets, CSK managed to push past the 180-run mark with a useful cameo from Prashant Veer, who added 11 quick runs at the end.

CSK eventually finished at 180/7 in their 20 overs, a total that reflects both their aggressive start and middle-order resilience.

For Sunrisers Hyderabad, Cummins was the standout bowler with impressive figures of 3/28 in his four overs. Sakib Husain supported well with two wickets, while Praful Hinge and Eshan Malinga chipped in with one wicket each.

Brief scores: Chennai Super Kings 180/7 (Dewald Brevis 44, Sanju Samson 27, Shivam Dube 26; Pat Cummins 3-28, Sakib Husain 2-34) vs Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Team Maverick.
