Needle and Thread Changed Her Destiny: Mrs. Vishakha Mandal Becomes a Symbol of Self-Reliance
Support from a Self-Help Group Turned Her Skill into a Livelihood and Identity
Raipur, June 2026 : Once struggling to meet her family’s daily needs, Mrs. Vishakha Mandal has today become financially independent through her skills, determination, and self-confidence. Her journey, which began with a needle and thread, has evolved into an inspiring success story that reflects the growing empowerment of rural women.
A resident of Radha Krishna Nagar village in Balrampur district, Vishakha Mandal’s life was much like that of many rural women, marked by household responsibilities and limited resources. Her family’s income was modest, and concerns about the future were constant. However, a turning point came when she joined the Jagrati Women’s Self-Help Group under the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM).
Through the self-help group, she received a loan of Rs. 30,000 from the Community Investment Fund, which gave wings to her aspirations. She used the amount to purchase a sewing machine and other necessary materials and started a small ladies’ tailoring shop at Savani Mod, Maharajganj.
The initial phase was not easy, but through her skill, hard work, and commitment to quality, Vishakha gradually established a strong reputation among her customers. Over the past two and a half years, her tailoring shop has become a trusted destination for women in the area.
Her growing popularity is particularly evident during festivals and wedding seasons, when demand for her services rises significantly. During occasions such as Diwali and Dussehra, her daily earnings reach as high as Rs. 3,000. Today, her annual income is approximately Rs. 1.5 lakh, earning her recognition as a “Lakhpati Didi” (a woman earning over one lakh rupees annually).
Vishakha says that the self-help group provided her with much more than financial assistance—it gave her confidence and a sense of self-worth. Earlier, she depended on others to meet many of her family’s needs, but now she plays a significant role in supporting the household financially.
Her confidence and positive outlook demonstrate how rural women can achieve remarkable success when given the right opportunities and support. She believes that access to financial resources, training, and community support can transform lives and create sustainable livelihoods.
Perhaps the most inspiring aspect of her journey is that she is now motivating other women in her community to join self-help groups and pursue self-employment opportunities. By sharing her experiences and encouraging others to develop their skills, she is helping more women move toward economic independence and self-reliance.
Vishakha Mandal’s story stands as a powerful example of how government-supported livelihood initiatives and self-help groups can empower rural women, improve family incomes, and contribute to the broader goal of inclusive rural development. Her success illustrates that with determination, support, and opportunity, even a small beginning can lead to lasting transformation.
