Southwest Monsoon Arrives in Telangana, IMD Forecasts Rain Across State
Hyderabad, June 2026 : The Southwest Monsoon officially entered Telangana on Monday, bringing relief from the prevailing summer heat and raising hopes for a favourable rainy season. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rainfall across several parts of the state over the next three days, with isolated heavy showers likely in some districts.
According to the Hyderabad Meteorological Centre of the IMD, the monsoon entered Telangana through Jogulamba Gadwal district in the southern part of the state. Its arrival marks the beginning of the crucial four-month rainy season that supports agriculture, water resources, and overall economic activity across Telangana.
The weather department said the Southwest Monsoon has advanced further into additional parts of the west-central and east-central Arabian Sea, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and sections of Telangana. Meteorologists noted that atmospheric conditions remain favourable for the monsoon’s further progress over the next two to three days.
The IMD expects the monsoon to cover the remaining parts of Telangana along with additional areas of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. It is also likely to advance into more regions of the Bay of Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, West Bengal, Sikkim and the northeastern states.
The Hyderabad Meteorological Centre has predicted light to moderate rainfall at isolated places in several districts of Telangana on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. While widespread heavy rain is not expected immediately, some southern and eastern districts may receive isolated heavy showers during this period.
The department has also warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds with speeds ranging between 40 and 50 kilometres per hour in isolated areas. Residents have been advised to remain cautious during thunderstorm activity and take necessary precautions.
For Hyderabad city, the IMD has forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers towards the evening or night hours on Monday. These weather conditions may be accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 50 kmph. The maximum temperature in the city is expected to remain around 37 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature is likely to be about 25 degrees Celsius.
The weather office stated that there is unlikely to be any significant change in maximum temperatures across Telangana during the next three days despite the arrival of the monsoon.
Meanwhile, parts of the state have already witnessed substantial rainfall. According to the daily weather report, isolated heavy rainfall was recorded in Suryapet and Rangareddy districts.
Data released by the Telangana Development Planning Society (TDPS) showed that the highest rainfall of 88.5 mm was recorded at Mattampalle in Suryapet district. The state’s average rainfall for the day stood at 4.2 mm, slightly above the normal average of 3.7 mm for this period.
The Southwest Monsoon season, which extends from June to September, is the most important rainfall period for Telangana. The state receives a normal annual rainfall of 923.8 mm, of which nearly 80 per cent, or 740.6 mm, is typically received during the monsoon months.
With the monsoon now setting in, farmers and water resource managers will closely monitor rainfall patterns in the coming weeks as Telangana enters its most significant agricultural season of the year.
