Trump Accuses Iran of Violating Ceasefire with Drone Attack in Strait of Hormuz

Washington, June 2026: US President Donald Trump has accused Iran of violating the recently signed ceasefire agreement after alleging that Iranian forces launched at least four one-way attack drones targeting commercial vessels transiting the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

In a post on his Truth Social platform on Friday, Trump claimed that one of the drones struck the upper deck of a large cargo ship, causing damage but not preventing the vessel from continuing its journey.

“One of the drones solidly hit the upper deck of a large and very expensive cargo-carrying ship. Damage was done, but the ship was able to proceed on its way. We knocked down three other drones,” Trump wrote.

The US President described the alleged attack as a clear breach of the ceasefire agreement reached between Washington and Tehran earlier this year through international mediation. The agreement was designed to reduce military tensions in the Gulf region and guarantee the safe passage of commercial vessels through one of the world’s busiest maritime corridors.

Trump, however, did not identify the affected vessel or specify the exact time of the alleged attack.

The accusation follows reports from the British military, which said on Thursday that a merchant vessel had been struck by a projectile off the coast of Oman. The incident has further heightened concerns over security in the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow but strategically crucial waterway linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO), a specialised agency of the United Nations, also confirmed on Thursday that it had suspended plans to evacuate commercial ships stranded in the region after the reported drone strike raised fresh safety concerns.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important energy corridors, with nearly 30 per cent of global seaborne crude oil shipments passing through the waterway. Any disruption to navigation in the strait has the potential to impact international energy markets and global trade.

The ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran, concluded after months of heightened regional tensions, was intended to prevent further military escalation while ensuring uninterrupted maritime commerce through international waters.

Trump’s latest allegations come amid renewed international scrutiny of Iran’s military activities in the Gulf. The United States continues to maintain a significant naval presence in the region, conducting regular maritime patrols to safeguard shipping lanes and deter potential threats.

Iranian authorities had not responded publicly to Trump’s accusations at the time of reporting. The US State Department has also not issued an official statement providing additional details on the alleged drone attack or the status of the ceasefire agreement.
